Past Animal Attacks at Fairs in Minnesota

A bull at the Dakota County Fair wasn't the first animal to get loose at a local fair.

Eight people were injured Wednesday at the Dakota County Fair in Farmington after the rodeo bull escaped. Click here to read more about the incident.

The following is a look back at other animal incidents reported at fairs in Minnesota.

2007 - Bull Loose at Minnesota State Fair

A 1,600-pound bull got loose at the Minnesota State Fair while its owner was moving the animal. The bull got spooked and ran off into the crowd.

The bull rammed a fire hydrant, hitting the soft spot on its head, which killed him instantly.

It was the bull's first year at the fair. The owner said it was the new surroundings that scared the animal.

2006 - Steer Tramples Teen at Kandiyohi County Fair

A 1,200-pound black Angus steer trampled a teenage boy at the Kandiyohi County Fair in Willmar. Cody Hinman, who was 15 at the time, was trampled by the steer while letting the animal out of its barn at the county fair. Cody's father eventually got control of the steer.

Cody suffered a concussion, blood on the brain, nerve damage and puncture wounds. The next day, Cody returned to the fair and won the Top Dairy Yearling trophy.

The steer returned home to the family's farm.

Cody said they planned to take the animal to the butcher.

2001 - Horse Loose at the Minnesota State Fair

A horse got loose at the Minnesota State Fair after the animal and two other horses were assaulted by a couple men. The men hit the horses while they were entering the Midway.

The assault spooked one of the patrol horses named Cash, which led to the horse rearing up and breaking away from her owner.

She bolted into the crowd. Eleven people suffered cuts and bruises to their ankles and elbows. Four were treated and released from the hospital.

The horse ran back to her barn. The horses later refused to leave their usual barn for baths.

CROWDS have the chance to see a master at work this week.
Gerry Cottle, the world famous performer, who ran away to join the circus when he was 15, brought his travelling show The Big Top to Hunston.
“It really is different. It’s for today’s audience,” he said before the first performance today (August 9).
“They can expect a very fast, funny show.”
The show features 50 different acts in 100 minutes, with a range of performers, from jugglers and African acrobats to a wheel of death.
During his time in Chichester, Mr Cottle was able to see a performance of Barnum at the Theatre in the Park.
“I saw Barnum. I know it’s got knocked in the press but it’s a lovely production.”
He described his travelling show as a ‘modern Barnum’, adding the celebrated performer was ‘always a showman’.
The Big Top’s first performance in Hunston was last Thursday, with several shows taking place until the last performance on Tuesday.
The performers have now headed to Southsea Common, where they will be performing shows until September 1.
After making a triumphant return to touring last year, following retirement in 2003, Mr Cottle said this year’s weather was the ‘opposite’ to last year’s wet weather.
“Never in my whole career have I seen so much rain and mud,” he said.
The performance is situated at Spring Field, in Hunston, off the B2145.
There are performances at 7.30pm tonight, 2pm and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, with performances at 3pm and 7.30pm on Monday and the final performance at 3pm on Tuesday.

Cedar Fair Attendance Flat in First Half of Year

Cedar Fair Attendance Flat in First Half of Year
SANDUSKY (AP) -- Amusement park operator Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. says attendance has been down just a bit in the first half of this year.
The company whose parks include Cedar Point and Kings Island in Ohio said Thursday that attendance was down less than 1 percent through June.
But the slight attendance drop has been offset by an increase in spending at its parks and at its hotels this summer.
The company with headquarters in Sandusky says it sold a record number of season passes for this year and that group sales also are up.
Cedar Fair owns more than a dozen amusement parks and water parks around the country, along with a handful of hotels.

COUNTY CORK, IRELAND---

Animal circus protest in Jungle City

From: southernstar.ie
A peaceful protest was attended by approximately forty people on in Clonakilty last Sunday afternoon, as demonstrators held banners and distributed leaflets opposing the use of animal acts in circuses.

The protest took place at the entrance of Clonakilty Showgrounds where Courtney Brothers Circus was performing for two days, with acts which include both tigers and elephants.

The protest was particularly poignant, as Clonakilty made the news last year for the highly publicised Jungle City Exhibition, which ran for several weeks featuring life-sized sculptures of elephants and tigers, painted by local artists and children.

The exhibition was aimed at raising awareness of the increasing vulnerability of these endangered species and their natural habitat.

The protest was organised by ARAN (Animal Rights Action Network), whose reputation as a well respected and highly professional charitable organisation has grown over the years, largely thanks to the continued hard work and commitment of it's founder Mr John Carmody, and the dedication of its supporters. The organisation has provided much evidence of the suffering of circus animals, brought about largely by the stress of confinement and boredom, as they travel from town to town.

A local spokesperson for ARAN commented: ‘It is somewhat ironic to say the least, that Clonakilty businesses have benefited and continue to benefit from huge publicity generated by The Jungle City theme, and the animal sculptures which remain on display throughout the town, and draw in many tourists.

‘And yet the local Council saw fit to over rule the previous Mayor and local Councillor Cionnaith Ó Súilleabháin, when he tried to implement a ban on animal circuses appearing n the town earlier this year. This can only damage Clonakilty’s reputation as a particularly forward thinking town, thanks largely to it being Ireland’s first Fair Trade Town, and it hosting an array of festivals each year including the Random Acts of Kindness Festival which took place just a few weeks ago.’

Councillor Ó Súilleabháin has promised to raise the issue again in September, when he very much hopes that the Town Council reconsider their previous decision and implement a ban on Animal Circus in Clonakilty.

MOSCOW CIRCUS

Moscow Circus lacks a presence abroad

This summer, the U.S. hosted several big circus performances - from the New York-based Big Apple company, all the way to the Golden Dragon Acrobats of China. The only big top missing was that of the Moscow Circus.

America likewise boasts a variety of circus shows. Source: AFP / East News
Back in the 90’s, the performing art of circus was extremely popular in the former Soviet. Some 70 permanent circus buildings were found in all major cities from Moscow to Vladivostok. Summer circuses, performed in tents, were also a big hit.

All kinds of circus shows could be found: traditional circus, all-female circus, animal circuses, ice circuses, water circuses, and even midget circuses for the tiny folks who did tiny tricks.

These days, America likewise boasts a variety of circus shows. Here in Washington DC, this year several circuses passed through the nation’s capital.
There was the Big Apple circus company, a New York-based company famous for its Big Apple and East Coast performances. It’s also known for its classical, one-ring shows and live music. Plus it boasts animals, a rarity these days in the world of red rings.
The Golden Dragon Acrobats From China also made an appearance this summer in Washington showing off their famous acrobatic feats and tumbling tricks. Don’t try to find any animals here. It’s the acrobatics that wow the audience.

Then came the UniverSoul Circus, known as the African-American soul version of the circus world. With hip-hop dancers, and a distinct soul feel to it all, their performances bring the African-American experience to the stage.

Of course, Canada’s traveling Cirque du Soleil show “Quidam” can’t be forgotten. WIth its new age choreography, an abundance of Russian performers, it’s hard to go wrong with this one.

Storm Lake, Iowa--Bright sparkled costumes, pulsing exotic music, and a pair of well-trained elephants filled the star-spangled big top of Carson and Barnes Circus on Tuesday evening. The Pilot-Tribune sat down with a few of the performers who work the show ring and literally live on the road, to fine out about modern-day circus life and what actually happens behind the scenes of the magical big-top world.

Nineteen year old July Coronel can sling 50 twirling hula hoops around her slight body with a subtle wiggle. How she does this? "Practice," she smiles, adding that the circus is in "her blood."

She describes a typical day of a circus performer. "I sell tickets 9-12 p.m. then I practice for a couple hours, then shower and eat and get ready for the show. You have to love the circus to keep up with the work," says Coronel.
Coronel's family not only works in the circus in the U.S., but her larger family from her native country, Peru, owns and operates a circus in South America. She says the main difference is in the U.S. the circus only sets up in towns for one or two days while in Peru the circus stays in one spot for two to three weeks at a time. The acts differ somewhat during the show as well.

NEW AQUARIUM EXHIBIT

In National Aquarium’s Blacktip Reef exhibit, sharks swirl in a delicate underwater Gotham

The 20 slick, mouse-gray blacktip reef sharks zipping through the waters at the National Aquarium look nothing like the bloodthirsty beasts of “Sharknado.” Two years old and only slightly longer than two feet, they’re toddlers — not much bigger than fat house cats.

Among sharks, these former residents of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef region are distinctive for their inky-tipped fins and tails. Last week, they arrived at their new home to play a unique role, one they will grow into over time: They are the stars of the Baltimore aquarium’s effort to re-create indoors an Indo-Pacific coral reef teeming with life.

Take a dive with Calypso, a three-flippered sea turtle getting used to a painstakingly re-created coral reef habitat at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Post video journalist AJ Chavar went into the deep.

In the new, permanent, $12.5 million, 13,500-square-foot Blacktip Reef exhibition, visitors will be able to watch these 11 female and nine male sharks mature. Over time, each will grow to as long as five feet. They will mate and, perhaps, bear pups of their own. Visitors can watch from high above, from just a few feet away from the water and through underwater windows as the sharks race dizzyingly close to more than 600 other fish. Cobalt-blue surgeonfish and dazzling diamondfish, among others, will glide around lumbering rays and become one with a “reef” that is, in fact, made of 3,000 pieces of painstakingly crafted man-made coral.

LEBANON FAIR

Lebanon Area Fair: For many, it's all about the fare

Fair weather during fair week drew hungry crowds, leading many vendors at this year's Lebanon Area Fair to describe their sales in tons.
The four fair-run food venues - the outdoor and indoor eateries as well as Sunday's ham dinner and Thursday's chicken barbecue - sold an estimated five tons of meat. For perspective, that's the approximate weight of one of the large farm tractors on display at the fair.
French fry sales were equally staggering: The four tons of potatoes ordered for the week weigh approximately as much as six heifer cows. Or eight horses. Or the estimated weight of all poultry on display - multiplied by two.
Ice cream sales were also impressive. The 210 gallons ordered for the week could fill four bathtubs. And 200 servings would still be left over.
Many of the 13 independent food vendors on the midway reported a strong year as well.

"Sales are up over last year," said Marcy Poorman of Mr. Sticky's sticky-bun stand. By Thursday, owner Phil Poorman estimated 3,000 of the treats had been sold.
Many veterans of the fair explained that this year's sales were exactly what they would expect from a sunny fair week.
After spending eight years at the Lebanon Area Fair, Quentin resident and owner of Friar's Fish and Chips stand Jeanne Ruiz claimed that weather and attractions are the keys to predicting food sales for a night.
Sunday's rain kept many fair-goers at home, and Wednesday's Tractor Pull and Elvis impersonator drew large crowds ready to try her sweet tea, fish and chips and specialty Scotch Egg.
