From Mike Naughton

Now this is FLASH! Nathan started out working at FELTMAN'S up the street, then opened his own stand.

  1. At the time the public didn't trust the mysterious ingredients of a hot dog. So Nathan's hired a group of men and dressed them in white clothing, lab coats, etc and had them stand in front of the place eating hot dogs. The public assumed the white-clad customers were doctors from the neighboring hospital.

The conclusion was: if the food was good enough for the doctors then it was good enough for all.

"Eat two hot dogs and call me in the morning."
