O. C. "SCOOT COUPES"

OCEAN CITY -- Resort authorities have safety concerns about a new breed of rental scooter appearing on Coastal Highway: the Scoot Coupe.
"These vehicles, we don't think, qualify (as motor vehicles) but they move pretty fast," said Ocean City Police Chief Bernadette DiPino. "I've also seen them in the bus lane. I'm really concerned for the safety of the occupants and also of other drivers not seeing them. They're just not clearly visible.
"They look like fun vehicles," she added, "(but) I just have terrible visions of a terrible crash."
The compact two-seaters are about the size of a bumper car and are basically three-wheeled scooters with a plastic shell, resembling a low-slung dune buggy. They come with seat belts, roll bars, side mirrors and hand brakes. They even have a trunk.
