Catch the Moscow Circus this weekend
'Moscow Circus on Stage' comes to the Millenium Theater this weekend
By Meredith Deliso
Friday, December 17, 2010 4:10 PM EST
This is a circus show for people who take circuses seriously.

From impresario Victor Shulman, the man who brought us “Russian Circus on Ice” a few years back, comes “Moscow Circus on Stage,” a stage show featuring stars of the Russian circus scene at the Millennium Theater in Brighton Beach on Dec. 25 and 26.

“Russians are known for their circus,” said promoter Tatiana Barrios-Flores. “Shulman hand-picked these performers, many of whom have traveled all over the world.”

That includes contortionists, aerialists, a contortionist who does aerial tricks, strong men, dogs that can do back flips and ride bicycles (seriously), and one of the most famous clowns in Russia — Boris.

“People should not confuse this with a ‘Disney on Ice’ or some other circus show,” said Shulman. “These are circus performers audiences would find in shows like the ‘Cirque du Soleil.’ We have found the greatest gymnasts and finest circus acts and put them on stage.”

“Moscow Circus on Stage” at the Millennium Theater [1029 Brighton Beach Ave. between Brighton 11th and Brighton 12th streets in Brighton Beach, (718) 615-1500], Dec. 25 and 26 and noon and 3 pm. Tickets $40-$60; children five and under can sit on their parent’s lap for half price. For info, call (631) 727-0222.
NEWS FROM OLD FRIENDS!
Daniel, Andrea, Chris & Bill
Hey, Dick,
Merry Christmas to you and thank you for the Christmas greetings.
This (see below) is the 2010 the family photo we sent out this year.
The photo by the way was taken at a local animal and amusement park, Eiffel Park, near where Daniel and Andrea live in the Eiffel region of western Germany. And was it cold when that photo was taken? You bet it was -- but we have had two absolutely miserable days and nights (down to 20 at night) here in Florida the past week with the Arctic Express that has slammed much of the eastern US. And yet, by the weekend, they are talking 70s during the day!

Take care. Hope you have a very Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for the New Year.

Bill & Chris

FAMOUS COLE CIRCUS--1960 (JERRY CASH)

Dick;
Hope you are feeling better and get home real soon. I think, a while back, you requested pictures of the Famous Cole Circus. I bought these in the 60's. I wish I could remember the name of the person to give him credit, but the only reference I have on the envelope is Clock Repair Service, Madison. These were shot in 1961 at Janesville, Wis. The color photo has a date on the back of 1960.
I hope this helps you a little , while you are under the weather.

Elephants will escort Santa Claus to the event Friday. (Photo courtesy Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus)
By Post Staff December 14, 2010
Do you know how lucky you are?

For the first time ever, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus will offer a free performance for kids of all ages on the Great Lawn at the Waterfront in West Palm Beach. It’s a preview of what you’ll see when the circus comes to the Palm Beach County Convention Center from Dec. 28 through Jan. 2.
David DaVinci, who calls himself a ‘thrillusionist,’ will astound you with his ability to blur the line between reality and illusion. The Ku Fu Kings perform mixed martial arts with a unique twist, and the Barons of Balance reveal amazing agility as they leap from one thin wire to another. Santa arrives in the finale in an elephant caravan and the elephants will be treated to a holiday feast. The show also features magicians, acrobats and clowns.

Following the performance, stay to see two holiday classics – The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and Miracle on 34th Street – at the Screen on the Green event. Chairs on the great lawn are available on a first-come-first-served basis or you can bring your own. The giant screens will also provide close-up views of the performance.

From The Washington Post.com
It's hard not to love the circus.
Just ask the pope.

Four acrobats known as Fratelli Pelligrini (which means Pilgrim Brothers in Italian) performed for Pope Benedict XVI and a group of his advisers this week. At one point, the acrobats took off their shirts and formed a human tower in front of the 83-year-old leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

The performance was part of a convention of circuses that the Vatican had organized. After the acrobats finished their stunts, the pope clapped and stood to greet the performers.

Robert Pattinson Aches for Reese Witherspoon Under the Big Top

Wed., Dec. 15, 2010 by Natalie Finn
Reese Witherspoon has a choice: Stay with the worst Nazi from Inglourious Basterds so that she can continue to play with the circus animals—or run away with Robert Pattinson.

Let's examine her dilemma.

BEHIND THE SCENES: Reese dishes on love and Rob

Set mostly in the 1930s, Water for Elephants--based on the best-seller by Sara Gruen—features R.Pattz as veterinary student Jacob, who quits school after a family tragedy, decides to ride the rails and unwittingly jumps a circus train. There he finds ringleader August, played by Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, and his wife, Marlena, played by a pin-curled Witherspoon.

From the looks of this first trailer, August is a charming but violent guy who ultimately decides that the smoldering vampire lost soul who obviously has bedroom eyes for his wife needs to go.

Hal Holbrook plays the elderly present-day Jacob (look K.Stew, it's your future!), so those who didn't read the book can assume he at least makes it out of the love triangle—and "the most famous circus disaster of all time"—alive.

Water for Elephants is awash in period detail, close-ups of Rob's pretty eyes and Reese's angelic skin, Big Top razzle-dazzle and, unavoidably, plenty of elephant dung.

But only by seeing the movie, in theaters April 15, will we know whether the PattinSpoon combination soars or if the actors really stepped in it.

Big Top Tours traces Sarasota’s colorful circus history
PAUL VIDELA/pvidela@bradenton.comLifelong circus performer and clown Toby Ballantine narrates as the Big Top Tours bus winds its way through Sarasota during a tour of historical circus sites and points of interest in the area.

SARASOTA -- The sprawling Ringling Museum of Art parking lot was nearly full but the colorfully painted Circus Coach idling near the Mertz Theatre could not be missed.

The clown inside the memorabilia-adorned shuttle bus created an unforgettable first impression.
“Ready for some transportainment?” asked the host in the super-sized shoes.

The inaugural Big Top Tour launched Wednesday from the 20-acres of waterfront property purchased by John and wife Mable Ringling almost a century ago. John Ringling relocated the winter quarters of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus from Bridgeport, Conn., to Sarasota in 1927. The Florida city has been synonymous with circus ever since.

All the Circus King’s and relatives’ name-bearing biggies were included.

2011 OHIO FAIR DATES RELEASED

chillicothegazette.com
December 14, 2010
The Ohio Department of Agriculture on Monday released the official 2011 dates for 94 county and independent fairs and the Ohio State Fair.

The season kicks off with the Paulding County Fair June 13. The Ross County Fair will occupy its usual early August slot, running from Aug. 6 through 13, the week after the Pike County Fair, which runs from July 30 through Aug. 6.

The Ohio State Fair runs from July 27 through Aug. 7, and the fair season wraps up with the Fairfield County Fair in Lancaster Oct. 9 through 15.

State Fair's move was return to roots

Published: Tuesday, December 14, 2010
The Nebraska State Fair, with roots dating back to the late 1850s, has a long, rich history and tradition in the state.

But, according to James McKee, historian, publisher and co-owner of Lee Booksellers in Lincoln, the Nebraska State Fair is still as relevant as when it started as a territorial fair in Omaha nearly a decade before Nebraska became the 37th state on March 1, 1867.

McKee was the guest speaker on Tuesday at the noon Rotary Club meeting in Grand Island. He gave a slide presentation of the history of the State Fair.

While the State Fair had a number of homes, including Nebraska City, Brownville, Lincoln and Omaha, it wasn’t until 1901 that the Legislature selected the Lancaster County Fairgrounds as home to the State Fair. There it remained until 2010, when it moved west to Grand Island.

But while the State Fair has gone through many changes over the years, it has remained true to its original mission in the late 1850s to foster, encourage and develop agriculture in Nebraska, he said.

Get ready for Chinese State Circus extravaganza at Southport Theatre
Dec 15 2010 by Janine Yaqoob, Midweek Visiter
FROM the land of legends and Shaolin Warrior’s comes the incredible new Chinese State Circus production, the live action spectacular, Mulan.
As part of the 21 date theatre tour The Chinese State Circus arrives at Southport Theatre on Wednesday, March 9 and Thursday, March 10, 2011.
Following the show’s successful premiere in Liverpool earlier this year, organisers are expecting a rapturous response from audiences in Southport when the action extravaganza comes to town.
Explore the inspiring heroic story of a strong-minded country girl who joined the Emperor’s all-male army in place of her father who was too old to fight. Through her warrior skills she was promoted to the rank of General yet throughout her epic exploits defeating all her enemies no one was aware that she was a woman.
Witness a breathtaking fusion of precision acrobatics, Shaolin martial arts, dazzling circus skills, colourful characters from Peking Opera, physical theatre and drama choreographed to an original music score.
Entertainment for all the family, from the world’s leading Chinese acrobats. From gravity-defying gymnastics to the seemingly impossible body manipulations of the hand-balancer; from the leaping, rolling somersaulting repertoire of the hoop divers to the lavish tradition of the Lion Dance, the undisputed masters of physical theatre will have the audience on the edge of their seats.
Blink and you could miss it, such are the lightening reactions of the greatest exponents of martial arts, the Shaolin Wushu Warriors. Trained at the Shaolin Temple, they stretch the limits of human achievement in this dazzling new production.
The title role of Mulan is performed by martial arts expert, Cao Jing making her first appearance in the UK.
Joining Mulan is two of the most colourful characters in Chinese folklore, from the exclusive Peking Opera, the Monkey King and his zany companion, Pig, who are the audience’s guides through the adventure.

'I Have Seen the Future' film revisits 1939-40 NYC World's Fair

Joe Meyers, Staff Writer Tuesday, December 14, 2010
Many baby boomers recall their childhood visits to the New York World's Fair in 1964-65 with great affection, but that was just the sequel to an even bigger and better international gathering on the same site in Flushing Meadow, Queens, 25 years earlier.
The New York World's Fair of 1939-40 was a flashier and racier event -- with "girlie" shows and a popular aquacade water ballet that bared more female and male flesh than was common at the time -- but it also served as a cultural bridge between the Great Depression and the boom times that would follow World War II.
The fair is the subject of a new documentary, "I Have Seen the Future," by Westport filmmaker Lisa Seidenberg, who will be screening it at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Bridgeport Library downtown.
"What got me started was showing my film on the Merritt Parkway for most of 2009," Seidenberg said of her earlier documentary on the historic Connecticut highway. "People kept telling me they took the Merritt to the 1939 World's Fair."read more at:http://www.ctpost.com/entertainment/article/I-Have-Seen-the-Future-film-revisits-1939-40-885366.php
