Most grow out of the phase when they play with dolls or drive imaginary cars, but no one ever gets too old to enjoy the circus.
“It brings back memories,” says Rex Strayer, public relations director of the Moila Shrine Temple in St. Joseph.
The 58th annual Moila Shrine Circus will be held March 11 through 13 at the Civic Arena. As it has for decades, the Moila Shrine Circus will feature performers from the Royal Hanneford Circus — famous for high-flying acts like the Anastisini Bros. and Angela Martin as well as its array of monkeys, elephants and tigers.
In 1976, the Royal Hanneford Circus performed the Moslem Shrine Circus in Detroit and developed a name among Shrine Temples as a first-rate show. That great relationship between Royal Hanneford and the Shriners continues today. And it continues to bring thousands out to the Civic Arena to see a one-of-a-kind show.
“To see a child’s eyes get real big because an elephant comes by, that’s what it’s all about,” Strayer says. “That’s what people need to come back and enjoy.”
While the kids love seeing exotic animals up close, Strayer says the grown-ups are usually most impressed with the trapeze artists, contortionists and magicians.
“It’s just uncanny the way they do it,” Strayer says of the illusionists. “You’re standing right there and watching them and you can’t ever see what’s happening.”
Strayer says the Royal Hanneford Circus has recently added comedy acts and some old-school stunts to the show, too.
Of course, the best thing about the Moila Shrine Circus has never changed: It provides entertainment the whole family can enjoy. And in a time when even PG-rated digitally animated films like “Rango” have a few swear words in them, it’s comforting to know a clean, innocent and fun option exists for a weekend.
“You don’t have to worry about a slew of words you don’t want your kids to hear,” Strayer says. “Bring your kids out and have some fun.”
Show times are 7 p.m. today; 11 a.m., 3 and 7:30 p.m. March 12; and 1 and 5 p.m. March 13. Tickets are $6 for children under 12 and $12 for adults. Reserved seats cost an additional $2. For more information, call the Moila Shrine Temple at 232-5129 or visit www.moila.org.
