NEW CANAAN, Conn. — The Independence Day weekend is usually known for cookouts and fireworks. But this year, the circus will be added to the holiday mix in New Canaan. For the second year in a row, Circus Vidbel will perform on the playing fields of Saxe Middle School. And Monday, a collection of poles and canvas was magically transformed into the Big Top as workers erected the tent for the weekend shows.

This is the second year the circus has come to town. Last year, nearly 3,000 guests came to four sold-out performances. This year, organizers added an additional day with two shows. The New Canaan YMCA and Kiwanis Club of New Canaan are hosting the circus to benefit youth development programs at the YMCA and in the community. Last year's shows raised nearly $25,000.
