Lake George working on plans to host three-day carnival

LAKE GEORGE -- The carnival could be coming this August to the former Gaslight Village, which is expected to soon be officially named the Charles R. Wood Park.

Village officials have been in negotiations with the local American Legion and Amusements of America, the New Jersey-based company that operates rides at the Washington County Fair.

Lake George Mayor Robert Blais said Friday it appears that the park, which is owned by Warren County and the village, will host a scaled-down version of the company’s contribution to the Washington County Fair.

The carnival would be in operation Aug. 15 to 18.

“They’ll (Amusements of America) be driving through the area,” Blais said. “They have that week open.”

Blais said the local American Legion would sponsor the event and would use it as a way to generate revenues for improvements to its headquarters.

Amusements of America officials called the planned carnival a “community fair,” smaller than its counterpart in Greenwich. While smaller, the fair will still include rides, games and food, company officials said.

The fair would join the Big Apple Circus in July as the primary events in the park’s inaugural year.

Blais noted that, if successful this year, the carnival could become an annual event.

But the precedent the carnival’s presence could establish may be its most sweeping contribution.

Warren County and village of Lake George officials are currently in a transitional period with the Gaslight property.
