MANSFIELD — The striped blue and gold Piccadilly Circus Big Top — with its animals, acrobats and clowns underneath — won’t be pitched at Liberty Lake this week.

A zoning dispute between Mansfield officials and the organizers of the traveling circus is to blame for the circus picking up and moving on to the friendlier environs of the New Egypt Speedway.

“It’s just unfortunate they had to deny the community an event, especially since this would have been the very first circus to ever be in Mansfield,” Piccadilly Circus promotional director Cuinn Griffin said.

Griffin contends Mansfield Township waited until two weeks before its scheduled dates of May 9-13 at the Liberty Lake Day Camp, off Route 295, to inform the circus it didn’t have the zoning board approvals needed to host the circus at the Liberty Lake site.
