Entertainment czar, urban developer, abolitionist, Bridgeport mayor and philanthropist P.T. Barnum liked to do things in grand fashion.
And so do Bridgeport's Barnum Museum and Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo, which are joining forces to celebrate the 202nd birthday of Bridgeport's most famous 19th-century citizen (1810-1891).

Barnum's Birthday Bash will take place Thursday, July 5, at the zoo, which is celebrating its 90th birthday with a 90 Days of Summer fest. All Barnum activities will be included in regular zoo admission.

Kathleen Maher, executive director/curator of the Barnum Museum, said that by working with the zoo, the museum can spread the word about the ongoing multimillion dollar fix-up to the 1893 building from a 2010 tornado.
A highlight of the day will be a special presentation of "Barnum's World of Wonder and Magic" from noon to 1 p.m. at the Peacock Pavilion, produced by Center Ring Productions.

Featuring Joe Barney as P.T. Barnum, the show will "educate and entertain" while telling how Barnum changed the face of entertainment, here and abroad, Maher said. If it rains, the show will be in the Carousel building.

Clown noses will be given to all visitors throughout the day.
