Fairs in Portage and Lincoln Co. see big turn out

NORTH CENTRAL WISCONSIN (WAOW)-- It's fair season in north central Wisconsin and two in our area are wrapping up.
While some people are starting new traditions, others are continuing old ones.
Lorraine Dobbe has attended the Portage County Fair for the last 40 years. It's something she says brings back memories.
"It's a place to go and meet old friends and see their children and grandchildren and remember old times," Dobbe said.
And she says not much has changed at the fair in Amherst.
"The stands are in the same place, the people are about the same, see old friends," Dobbe added.
And she's not alone—thousands of others also headed to the fair this year. Organizers say a record number walked through the gates—more than 10,000.
"Each night we've been running out of wrist bands to get people in," Portage County Fair Board President Tim Pederson said.
What's new this year? The pancake breakfast--bringing in more than 250 people out on Sunday morning.
"Successful thing for the first year," Ambrosia Pub and Grill owner Troy Ambrose said.
Up in Merrill, the Lincoln County Fair wrapped up as well.
"So far, numbers are up, attendance is up. Things are looking great," Lincoln County Fair Board Director Dale Christiansen said.
Fair organizers estimate 25,000 people enjoyed the week long event.
"There have been a lot of changes this year and I think curiosity has them out here," Christiansen said.
One of those changes—a new grandstand, where spectators enjoyed the demo derby.
Some vendors, like LaFae Bloom say the fair is all about having a good time.
"We don't come to work unless we can play and have fun," Bloom said.
So whether it's in Merrill, or Amherst, folks that headed to Wisconsin fairs say it's all about family, fun and tradition.
