AVON, Ohio – The circus is coming to town!
Elephants will raise the big top in preparation for the Kelly Miller Circus coming to the Knights of Columbus Father Ragan Council 3269 in Avon on Aug. 5. Two shows will be offered at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
"We were in Avon last year and are excited to return," Kelly Miller Circus General Manager Jim Royal said. "The show will feature some favorites from last year, plus a few new acts. It is two hours of fun and excitement for the entire family. The tent is designed for the circus performers to present their very best. It's not like other circuses which you might see in a large building. You are 40 feet away from the action. We also have ringside chairs. We like to say, 'you are so close to the action, the elephants can steal your popcorn.'"

One of the new acts performing this year is aerialist Rebecca Ostroff, who was featured in the 2011 film Water for Elephants.
"There also will be an aerial cradle act featuring two women working together," Royal said. "It will keep people on the edge of their seats. Another production number has a pirate theme. Clowns are also a big part of the show. We look for performers who are not only gifted in what they do, but can form a rapport with the audience. "
The Kelly Miller Circus has been in existence since 1938, according to its website. Today, the circus travels throughout the country with a fleet of 25 vehicles.
Assisting with setup for the event are the elephants themselves, using their trunks to maneuver the poles. The public is invited to watch the event at 9 a.m. the day of the show.
A portion of the proceeds from the circus shows will benefit the Knights of Columbus. The money is used to assist Catholic churches and schools in the community, as well as assistance for the developmentally disabled.
