DODGE CITY — Last week was a big week for television crews in Dodge City. The CBS 60 Minutes crew was in town interviewing officials from United Wireless Communications and the American Idol Small Town Audition Bus Tour heard 600 singers and chose a handful. But media attention and celebrity visits are not unusual in Dodge City.

DODGE CITY — Last week was a big week for television crews in Dodge City. The CBS 60 Minutes crew was in town interviewing officials from United Wireless Communications and the American Idol Small Town Audition Bus Tour heard 600 singers and chose a handful. But media attention and celebrity visits are not unusual in Dodge City.
The Santa Fe Railway tracks were built following the route of the Santa Fe Trail and that spurred the creation of many towns along the way.
Over the years, a number of "stars" and national heroes came through Dodge City traveling by train. Some undoubtedly passed through without notice but quite often, as the trains stopped for water and coal, or for the passengers to get a quick meal in the Harvey House, someone would either be spotted or somehow announce their presence. A crowd would gather. People would run to get their cameras. And sometimes someone notified the local newspaper.
These events did not always go off smoothly.
