State Fair’s Big Tex is a global star now, but we knew him when he was just a mildly creepy-looking, small-town Santa

It’s true: Before Big Tex became Big Tex, he was a giant Santa Claus in Kerens, Texas, east of Corsicana.
This photo, from the archives of The Dallas Morning News, was taken in 1949. Two years later, the Santa was purchased for $750 by Dallas banker R.L. Thornton, then president of the State Fair of Texas (and later the mayor of Dallas).
Transformed into a cowboy, Big Tex made his debut at the State Fair in 1952.
Here’s a brief history of the big dummy, from the State Fair of Texas website. It notes that part of Big Tex’s makeover involved a nose job and the removal of “a lascivious wink.”
