A Circus at Citi Field (and It’s Not the Mets)

Cirque du Soleil is bringing its newest big-top show, “Totem,” to a parking lot at Citi Field in March, a new location for its New York premiere of a show that deploys the company’s signature visual and acrobatic language for an ironic look at human evolution. The limited engagement begins on March 14 with tickets on sale for performances through April 7 (although an extension is possible). Tickets will be available on Tuesday for Cirque Club members and on Nov. 30 to the general public.

A cast of 52 artists from 19 countries will perform under the blue-and-yellow big top at the home of the New York Mets, in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens. Written and directed by Robert Lepage (“Ka”), “Totem” features characters that will evolve on a stage evoking a giant turtle, a symbol of origin for many ancient civilizations. The show had its premiere in Montreal in 2010 (The Montreal Gazette called it “A true wow”) and it has since toured 16 cities and 4 countries. Next year will be the 25th anniversary of the first visit of Cirque du Soleil to New York.
