Interstate 516 eastbound was shut down for more than five hours Monday night after a crash involving circus animals. Metro Police said a tractor trailer hauling animals for the UniverSoul Circus overturned around 4 p.m. between the exit and entrance ramps to Veterans Parkway. There were two camels, two llamas, two zebras, and two ponies inside the trailer.

Police said the driver, Michael Ramos of Riverview, Fla., struck a sign and guard rail which dislodged the trailer. Circus officials said the animals appeared to be in good condition. Emergency medical service crews treated one llama's nose and another llama's foot at the scene.

The animals were transferred to another trailer. Police charged Ramos with driving too fast for conditions, failure to maintain the lane of traffic, and having an improper class license.
