Adrienn Banhegyi has been jumping rope for more than half her life — and she will continue for years to come, if she has anything to say about it.
Banhegyi performs in Quidam, the upcoming Cirque du Soleil show to be performed at State Farm Arena in February. Quidamtells the story of a bored little girl who escapes into a surreal fantasy world where she can see and be anything she wants. The story somewhat parallels 29-year-old Banhegyi’s own beginnings as an athlete.
Her father was a physical education teacher in her native Hungary, and Banhegyi said that he taught her to jump rope as an inexpensive, practical way to get fit. She had no idea it would become a lifelong passion.
“…He thought it would be a great sport for his students since it’s a very low cost—you only need a rope and you can also jump barefoot,” she said.“It’s not something very expensive, and it improves the coordination, condition and the concentration a lot.”
The world-record holding skip-roper said that she and her classmates experimented with different tricks and styles of jumping, and soon her father decided to introduce the burgeoning team to rope-skipping at a competitive level. That was when Banhegyi began to dream of skipping rope professionally.
