MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mayor Ernest Davis will host "Mount Vernon Night" from under the big top when the UniverSoul Circus comes to the city March 28.
The single ring circus was originally formed to inspire African American audiences, but has evolved to become a culturally diverse group of performers from around the globe.
Several months ago, organizers of the circus met with Davis to discuss working with the city, offering the mayor the opportunity to host a night for residents to get together for a family event.
The circus combines arts, theater and music to create an interactive environment for both children and adults. It is the first Black circus since the 1800s.
“This circus reminds me of Mount Vernon, culturally diverse and filled with talent,” Davis said. “When I was approached about the idea, I immediately signed on. Like Mount Vernon, this circus is a place where the pulse of the community beats.”
This year’s UniverSoul production features several new acts from around the world. There is a neck-breaking head balancing act from Vietnam, a Capella vocalists from Atlanta and performances from nearly a dozen countries.
“The UniverSoul Circus is a circus where soul is not a color,” Davis said. “It’s an experience that Mount Vernon residents won’t soon forget.”
Tickets can be purchased online, with prices ranging from $25 to $35 per person. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the circus campground on 149th Street and Exterior Street in the Bronx.
