A lot of people have dreams, some of which are fulfilled and some that are not. Clifford E. Vargas had a dream of running the circus, which is exactly what he began doing in 1969 in creating Circus Vargas.
Although Vargas is no longer a part of the circus, the show still goes on: Circus Vargas will hold shows at the Temecula Promenade mall Thursday through April 8.
Vargas’ idea was to relive the traditions of the old circus under the big top tent, and the current owners have kept that dream alive.
“You have to try to do it more efficiently, better than the next guy and pay attention to the needs of customers,” said circus host Jon Weiss. “Nelson and Katya (Quiroga) have done that.”
For Weiss, the success of the circus has to do with having the right people in the right places.
“You can put all this stuff in place, develop great ideas, but it is about compiling the right people,” he said. “Any job can be filled by someone with a resume, but it’s devastating if you have the wrong guy. They compiled the right people for the job because we all multitask and we all have job titles.”
This year’s extravaganza is “Magikaria, A Fantastical Magical Experience,” which features mystery, magic, music and more.
“The idea is that there’s an air of magic in the big top,” he said. “Life is about experiences. We are doing bigger illusions, things we haven’t done before.”
That’s not to say that the traditional parts are gone.
