IT is a head-spinning statistic - more than 100 million people in more than 300 cities across more than 40 countries on six continents have fallen under the seductive spell of Cirque du Soleil.
And almost 30 years since its humble origins of 20 street performers in 1984, the Montreal-based powerhouse troupe continues to seduce, with another 15 million expected to see a Cirque show somewhere in the world this year - either in a vast arena or its spiritual home of the blue-and-yellow Grand Chapiteau.
Last night at the Perth premiere of the travelling show Ovo, 2500 spectators packed into the Grand Chapiteau on Langley Park, continuing a long-standing local love affair with the unstoppable juggernaut, which over the years has brought us the likes of Saltimbanco, Allegria, Quidam, Dralion and Varekai.
Ovo - Portuguese for egg - works around the theme of an ecosystem of insects, with a giant inflatable egg (symbolising the cycle of life) making for an imposing central stage prop, set to the sounds of crickets and other crawling creatures.

Soon enough, the egg disappears, revealing a colourful world of biodiversity and one of our three major characters, The Ladybug, a larger-than-life type who appears segregated from the rest of the colony, as if waiting for a moment of magic to awaken her senses.
When The Foreigner, a buzzing fly, arrives carrying a mysterious egg, it leaves the insects awestruck, and The Ladybug enamoured.
What unfolds is a seamless sequence of acts, with signature Cirque floor and aerial displays interspersed with banter between The Foreigner and Master Flipo - the insect community's chief moonlighting as Ovo's ringmaster whose job is to rev up the crowd -underscored by what is essentially a love story (and a most charming one at that).
