When the red and white raises over Yelm City Park Wednesday morning, get ready for “America’s Favorite Big Top Circus.”
Culpepper & Merriweather Circus comes to Yelm next Wednesday with performances at 5-6:30 p.m. and 7:30-9 p.m.
The Yelm Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the circus every two years, said Chamber Executive Director Cecelia Jenkins.
“It’s real fun for families,” Jenkins said. “We always are sold out with big crowds for both shows.”
The chamber sponsors the circus as a community service.
“It just brings a quality family-oriented opportunity to the community,” she said. “It’s hard to bring in age-appropriate, old-fashioned family fun. You can feel good about taking everybody to it.”
She said the circus features international entertainers from across the world.
“Lots of countries will be represented under the big top,” she said.
The circus has been featured on National Geographic’s Explorer TV series, Entertainment Tonight, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune and Arizona Highways Magazine.
People are invited to watch the raising of the big top tent Wednesday morning between 9:30 and 10, then stay for a free tour.
“This presentation offers a unique face-to-face opportunity for families, schools, and interested community members to meet and learn all about the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus family and includes a walking tour of the circus grounds,” a press release from the circus states. “Learn interesting facts about our performers, the history of our show and the different species of animals in our Circus family.”
On the circus day, performers bring “the magic of the circus” to life in each 90-minute show. The 2013 lineup includes Miss Simone and her amazing single trapeze, Miss Paulina’s proud prancing ponies, The Arlise Troupe on their “wild and crazy” unicycles, Natilie’s American Eskimo Escapades and the Ayala’s with “unforgettable” foot juggling.
The show also features original music written by Matt Margucci from Los Angeles.
“Our performers are sure to amaze, delight and entertain the audience members of all ages beyond your wildest imagination,” the release states. “The costumes alone are certainly of Las Vegas quality.”
