Fair is gone, extra pounds will remain

Anderson, CA---Another Shasta District Fair is part of history and only the photographs, memories and extra pounds gained while eating fair food remains.
For me, most of that came from judging the apple pie baking contest on Thursday.
Seven judges, including yours truly, sampled 10 of the best looking apple pies I’ve seen in a long time.
Oh, the price we pay for fun!
During my 27 years in northern California — I moved to Red Bluff in 1986, to Redding in 1989 and to Anderson in 2008 — I have covered or attended county fairs in Tehama, Shasta, Siskiyou and Trinity counties, as well as a few in Montana, Washington and Oregon.
Anderson’s fair ranks high on my list of favorite fairs, although the early-September and higher elevation of the Shasta County Fair, held in McArthur during the Labor Day weekend, still tops that list.
I’m not such a fan of crowded midways and thousands of people, so I tend to shy away from the California State Fair held in Sacramento. And I didn’t much like the San Mateo County Fair the years I lived in Redwood City much either.
Both were so big it was hard to get around and parking was such a hassle.
I really do enjoy the smaller, more family-friendly venues here in northern California.
