Finnish circus audiences grew by a whopping 31 percent from 2011. A total of over 200,000 people enjoyed Finnish circus, more than half of them outside Finland.
Small contemporary circus companies are flexible, and especially suited for international venues and tours. In 2012, some 13 Finnish circus troupes performed in 22 countries.
More traditional circus also attracted crowds last year, according to the Finnish Circus Information Centre.
The combined spectator numbers of contemporary circus and Sirkus Finlandia – a real Finnish circus institution – increased about 10 percent from the previous year.
