The fair, now in its 94th year, kicks off at noon today, ringing in a 10-day celebration of the state’s agricultural industry and offering concerts, carnival rides and family entertainment.
Organizers say past experience has prepared them for the challenges of facing the heat. Attendees can find various ways to stay cool on the Harrington fairgrounds. Temperatures are expected to climb to 90 and higher today and Friday.
Danny Aguilar, the fair’s marketing director, said air-conditioned tents will be placed around the grounds as well as misting stations.
“Overall, I feel we are very well-prepared.”
Last year, more than 300,000 visitors came to the Kent County fairgrounds off U.S. 13. Aguilar hopes to improve attendance with national performers ranging from country artist Trace Adkins to Victoria Justice of Nickelodeon fame.
Each day will feature a different artist performing at the M&T Bank Grandstand at around 7 p.m.

While Grandstand concerts are not included in general admission, gate tickets will grant visitors access to a wide range of attractions, including an assortment of food and craft vendors, jugglers, hypnotists as well as livestock shows.
The more than 180 food vendors will be offering fairground staples such as sausage rolls, funnel cake and cotton candy. More adventurous eaters can look forward to deep-fried Twinkies and “gator bites,” which Aguilar explains are “grilled chunks of alligator meat on a stick.”
“If you can think of it, it’s here,”Aguilar said.

After visitors have filled up on every type of food imaginable, there’s no shortage of entertainment to take in. Circus Hollywood will offer the complete circus experience under a big-top tent, offering trapeze acts, clowns and dancing stallions.
The Free Entertainment Tent will house various events over the course of the fair, from complimentary musical acts to Catherine Hickland’s hypnosis show. Hickland, a former Broadway and television actress, will give multiple shows in the Free Entertainment Tent each day of the fair.
