DOVER — Tucked away in the corner of the Delaware State Fair grounds, 12 rotund, curly-tailed racers bided their time until the clock struck 2 p.m. on Saturday.
For the fifth straight year, the Hollywood Racing Pigs station captivated audience members, some who may wonder: How fast can pigs run?
Saturday was a good day for the pigs — the three races were complete in just more than a minute each.
“Normally they don’t move that fast,” said Serge Coronas Jr., emcee and pig trainer with Hollywood Racing Pigs, a spin-off of Circus Hollywood presented by the Sussex County Federal Credit Union at the fair.
For the past 13 years, he has been training pigs for races, but animal training in his family runs much deeper. He said his family has been in the business for seven generations, raising pigs and horses as well as animals a bit more exotic, like tigers and elephants.
