CHINCOTEAGUE — Island artist Kevin McBride is known for his annual Pony Penning poster — a work of art depicting a scene from the famous Chincoteague ponies.
This year marks the 30th anniversary edition of the poster, and he has dedicated to his own Chincoteague pony, Cezanne.
Cezanne died in early 2012, and this year’s poster, “Cezanne’s Legacy,” is a tribute to the stallion, its family and its offspring.
“Cezanne was one of the great loves of my life,” said McBride shortly after the pony’s death. “He brought such joy to me and everyone who came in contact with him. He was special and he knew it.”
Just as Cezanne had a name for himself, McBride’s posters have become one of the enduring island traditions.
“It’s pretty much what I’m known for,” McBride said. “My posters go all over the world.”
For many, it is a staple of Pony Penning week to visit McBride’s Osprey Nest Art Gallery at 4096 Main St., to see the posters going back decades and look at the artist’s new works.
