They didn’t put it on their wedding registry, but Andrey and Viktoriya Medeiros couldn’t have been more thrilled with their present — a high-wire motorcycle act.
It was given to them by the owner of the circus where they met and married, and they’ve put the experience to good use. You’ll be able to see just how good when Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus’ Dragons comes to American Airlines Center, July 31-Aug. 11.
“He says, ‘I have something really exciting and dangerous for you’ and, of course, he knows us and what we prefer because we are circus performers and we love to entertain,” Andrey says by phone from the circus’s stop in Houston.
“We made an act together. I love it,” says Viktoriya.
And yes, this is how cute they are. Their sentences overlap all through the conversation.
Andrey, who is from Brazil, is a fourth-generation circus performer. He met Viktoriya, a Bulgarian gymnast new to the circus, when he was performing with a troupe he’d been a part of for 19 years. When the troupe was ready to leave, he had to “choose the job or choose the love,” he says.
He chose the love, and now he has Viktoriya; their 7-year-old son, Kristofer; and two acts that they have perfected together under the Medeiros Troupe banner. One features a 1,000-pound motorcycle that Andrey spins 360 degrees on a high wire 50 feet in the air. The other is a double hair-hang act in which Viktoriya and the third member of the troupe, Widny Neves, rise 35 feet and juggle, flip and spiral down silk chiffon on the strength of their long, dark hair.
Viktoriya says the secret to keeping her hair strong enough for the act is to eat right, exercise and treat her hair with egg and avocado. Andrey says the other secret is her strong will.
“This is why women have the babies. Men couldn’t do it.”
