AVON — As children, we all wished for our birthdays to be filled with wondrous spectacles. We would want to invite everyone in the neighborhood to celebrate an event of such grandiose proportions, filled with wide-eyed and jaw-dropping performances.
Kelly Miller Circus did just that on Saturday — not once, but twice.
Billed as “America’s one ring wonder,” the Kelly Miller Circus erected its 40-foot high by 120-foot round big top on the grounds of the Avon Village School to celebrate its 75th birthday for two shows at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Approximately 850 “children of all ages” filled the 1,100-capacity tent at 2 p.m. to witness death-defying stunts and animal pageantry—something that office manager and retired-fourth generation circus performer Tavana Brown says is still as popular today, as it was 75 years ago.

We want to leave people with a happy wonderful feeling of having a great time and being entertained.”

Brown said this year’s trip and birthday celebration will take the circus throughout the country during their 38-week season which runs from Feb. 5 to Oct. 25.
“We start out in Brownsville, Texas, and we go all the way up the East Coast as far as New Hampshire; then we turn around come back through the Midwest, ending up in Hugo, Oklahoma where we are based out of,” Brown said.
The circus, which works seven days a week, performing two shows every day, works hand in hand with civic organizations and smaller communities across America to not only entertain, but also to raise funds for charitable groups, Brown said. Continued...(2 MORE PAGES)
