Livestock exhibits, circus performances and a bike parade are just a few of the spectacles that will attract patrons to Novi on Labor Day weekend for the Fifth Third Bank Michigan State Fair.
Taking place at the Suburban Collection Showplace, the event runs Aug. 30 through Sept. 2. Michigan musicians will perform, vendors will sell their wares, kids can enjoy games and contests, and adults can stop by the beer garden.
The original Michigan State Fair began in 1849, but was discontinued in 2009 because of the state’s hard financial times. The fair is now a private sector event with many sponsors in addition to Fifth Third Bank. Executive Director Mike Watts said this is the first year it will be using the name Michigan State Fair.
“This is designed to survive and continue the tradition of the old State Fair,” said Watts. “We’re trying to reach back into the traditions of the old Michigan State Fair. This is a new beginning.”
New this year will be the butter cow statue and pig racing, staples of the old Michigan State Fair.
Watts said this will be the biggest fair yet at this location, with more rides, animals and home crafting components. The Shrine Circus performance will also be doubled in size with about a dozen acts.
