Country fans brave rain at fair

CHATHAM,NY — It was due to happen. The first heavy rains washed out an afternoon of summer fair time at the Columbia County Fair. While the rain was good for farmers, frogs and other water-loving sorts, the afternoon storm drenched fairgoers for a good hour after a day of country music.
But the clouds cleared up by early evening to allow another night of fun at the Columbia County Fair in Chatham, which featured enough food, games and music to keep the Labor Day weekend going.
Chelsea Cavanaugh, a Latham-based 17-year-old country-rock musician whose repertoire includes covers of Guns N’ Roses and Stevie Nicks, opened things up Sunday afternoon with a well-received performance.
She was followed by Joe Nichols, a country-rock musician and native of Arkansas known for his hits “Brokenheartsville,” “Unsinkable Ships” and some off-color songs.
Nichols played to a crowd of hundreds on a sunny afternoon before the heavy rains hit. He was scheduled to play an encore performance that night.
Erick Dallas, 35, of Stottville, brought his 13-year-old daughter Hailey to see Cavanaugh and Nichols in what was her first concert. Erick said he is a big country rock fan. He comes to the Columbia County Fair every year. “Its like a reunion,” he said.
