An old circus trainer reunites with his elephant after 15 years (video)
FROM: americablog.com

In 1988, Huell attended a touching reunion between Charlie Franks, an 80-year-old elephant trainer, and Nita, the elephant he had raised from a baby of five years. When Charlie retired in the early 1970s after traveling the world with his beloved performing elephant, he donated her to the San Diego Wild Animal Park, and hadn’t seen her for 15 years.

Charlie passed away shortly after the segment. Nita died in 2009 at the age of 60. The video remains as a tribute.

SURREAL CIRCUS: Competitive rope-skipper finds home, inspiration in Cirque du Soleil

WHERE: State Farm Arena, 2600 N. 10th Street, Hidalgo, Texas

Adrienn Banhegyi has been jumping rope for more than half her life — and she will continue for years to come, if she has anything to say about it.
Banhegyi performs in Quidam, the upcoming Cirque du Soleil show to be performed at State Farm Arena in February. Quidamtells the story of a bored little girl who escapes into a surreal fantasy world where she can see and be anything she wants. The story somewhat parallels 29-year-old Banhegyi’s own beginnings as an athlete.
Her father was a physical education teacher in her native Hungary, and Banhegyi said that he taught her to jump rope as an inexpensive, practical way to get fit. She had no idea it would become a lifelong passion.
“…He thought it would be a great sport for his students since it’s a very low cost—you only need a rope and you can also jump barefoot,” she said.“It’s not something very expensive, and it improves the coordination, condition and the concentration a lot.”
The world-record holding skip-roper said that she and her classmates experimented with different tricks and styles of jumping, and soon her father decided to introduce the burgeoning team to rope-skipping at a competitive level. That was when Banhegyi began to dream of skipping rope professionally.

The mansion the circus built
Holly home built by Barnum and Bailey founder filled with grandeur

TRI-COUNTY TIMES | TIM JAGIELO
This 110-year-old house at 212 College St. in Holly has an interesting past that involves a swirl of rumors ranging from humorous to ridiculous.

Holly — The existence of a 3,200-square-foot house on a quiet street in Holly is entrenched with The Greatest Show on Earth. Housing six bedrooms, seven fireplaces, five bathrooms, two kitchens and an estimated 20 to 30 doorways, the home at 212 College Street is mammoth and impossible to miss.
Considering who built the home, the grandeur should come as no surprise. James Anthony Bailey, of the famed Barnum and Bailey Circus, built the home in 1903 for his brother Edward McGinnis. After one tour through the house, it is evident that the home has the flair of showmanship that circuses are renowned for.
Hand-carved lion heads bare their teeth from one of the fireplaces. An 8-foot by 6-foot solid wood door dwarfs those who pass it by. A mural of an unnamed small town covers an entire wall in a room comprised of red velvet wallpaper. Stained-glass windows with original copper fixtures populate the home. These are just a few of the details that pop out in a house that seemingly has an unending amount of doors and rooms.

“I’m looking forward to selling it but I love showing it,” said Realtor Lori Goldsmith. “Everyone wants to see it. Showing it can become somewhat of a three-ring circus.”
Current owner Helen Bates bought the house with her husband Gordon in 1961 and lived in the house for 51 years. Prior to their purchase, the house had been fitted into several apartments. Bates said her husband was a realtor and described him as a ‘house nut,’ and had to own the house when he first came upon it in the mid ‘50s.

Manatee County Fair opens under chilly skies

The midway opens Thursday night at the Manatee County Fair.

MANATEE -- Carnival lights twinkled in the night sky over Palmetto Wednesday night as the 97th annual Manatee County Fair kicked off.
A cool breeze whipped through the fairgrounds where people bundled up in coats, scarves, gloves and hats to enjoy rides, games, the swine show and foods of the fried variety. Tickets were half price for the opening night of the 10-day event.
"We've got a decent crowd in the midway and the center stands for the hog show," said Dan West, fair manager, halfway through the night. "It rained a little this afternoon and that stayed around longer than expect then a bit of a breeze started, but it is an average crowd for opening night."

PAUL VIDELA/Bradenton Herald
The Miller family from Bradenton almost stayed home due to the cooler weather moving in after record-breaking high temperatures earlier in the week.
"We almost didn't come because of the weather, but I'm glad we did," Karin Miller said. "It's not too crowded and it won't be that way later. We're here for the night."
Miller said it was the fourth year that her family has come to the fair.
"And it's a lot of fun," chimed her daughter, Rain, 10. Rain's favorite ride is the Zipper, which she describes as an "oval Ferris wheel but the seats are never level."
Her younger brother Hunter enjoys the fun houses and Gravitron.
Other families came out for the food.

Circus loses in planned kangaroo boxing match at Columbus armory
By Boris Ladwig
from: therepublic.com
January 17, 2013
COLUMBUS, Ind. — A boxing match between a kangaroo and a human scheduled for this weekend in Columbus cannot take place because the organizers failed to file the proper paperwork, according to a city official.

The match, organized by Stardust Circus, had raised the ire of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, which had filed a complaint with the National Guard, which was to host the match at its armory in Columbus.

Kevin Konetzka, animal care services manager for the city of Columbus, said anyone who plans to bring a wild animal into the city has to request that an exception be made to a local law that forbids that wild animals are "kept, owned, harbored, boarded, sold or let for hire within the city."

Konetzka said neither the National Guard nor the circus had filed for an exception, which must happen at least 14 days before the event.

FAMILY FUN: The circus features a variety of affordable activities, including face painting. Pictured, Gina Sidari, 6, gets the finishing touches on her cat makeup.
The Cole Circus has been coming to local schools for a quarter-century. Martin, who has been involved with the show since graduating a year early from high school in 1977, said it’s like seeing old friends when he arrives in town.
“I have friends in every spot,” Martin said. “You get to see families grow up and come back with their kids. It’s very rewarding.”

ACTIVE PARTICIPANT: Billy Martin's Cole All-Star Circus brought a burst of excitement to Albion's high school gymnasium Thursday as part of a two-act swing through Orleans County. Pictured, volunteer Shane jumps right in with The Fausto Scorpions, a family of acrobats from the Phillippines.
This year’s 18-man show features a variety of acts including returning favorites like Slinko, who celebrated his birthday with a routine set to Gangam Style; and the Daring and Lovely Angela, whose trapeze act had children alternating between holding their breath and cheering wildly.
New additions include the Sensational Sadrak, a contortionist who fit himself into a small glass box.
“Every show, every gym is different,” Martin said. “Every night is like opening night ... it never gets old. I know exactly what’s coming but I see get to see how all the kids react.”
