Circus performers give back to community during Macon stay

The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus is taking time out of its Macon Centreplex performance this weekend to give back to the local community.
The circus teamed up with the "Beads of Courage" organization to distribute beads to children at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. On Friday, performers sat down with kids and provided encouragement to those in the hospital. Children and circus members are making necklaces and bracelets with the beads.
"These kids just remind us that what we're doing is worth something. when you're a part of the circus, you're immediately transported back to being a three-year-old kid with the shock and amazement of everything. Getting to give back to that little child is something that really touches all of us," said Circus Ringmaster David Shipman.
The circus is performing at the Macon Centreplex through this weekend.

circus coming to town

LEESBURG
ROXANNE BROWN | Staff Writer
February 01, 2013
LEESBURG, FL--The circus is coming to Leesburg today for a pair of shows at the National Guard Armory at 400 W. Meadow St.
"We have so much for the kids to see, they'll love it," said Jeane Ybarra, owner of the Fantazia Circus. "We have jugglers, acrobats, flying trapeze, dog acts, clowns and a special cartoon character guest for the kids at both shows."
The two shows are at 7 p.m. today and on Saturday. Tickets for adults are $12, but coupons allow one adult to bring along two children for free. Ybarra said coupons have been placed in most convenience stores and have been sent home with children at most schools in Leesburg.
Two of the show's main attractions are Princess Arisbeth on the trapeze and the Ybarra brothers in the "Globe of Death."
"Arisbeth (Morales) is amazing on the trapeze and she is so beautiful, which is why we call her Princess Arisbeth," Ybarra said. "And the Ybarra brothers, they are so good on their motorcycles. Usually we have two motorcycles, but this time we will have three. We've never done that before."
The Ybarra Brothers, originally from Brazil, just came back from touring in Portugal, Ybarra said.
Other acts include the Morales brothers on unicycles, a trampoline act by the Ybarra brothers and a juggling act by Jonathon Ybarra.
The doors will open at 6 p.m. nightly and during the hour before the show, people will have an opportunity to purchase sno-cones, popcorn, cotton candy, souvenirs or get their faces painted.
"There is a lot to do, something for everyone," Ybarra said.
According to the circus' website, the Ybarra family are considered pioneers in the circus world. Ignacio Ybarra Sr., the grandfather of the youngest generation of the family, invented new tricks on the flying trapeze, many of which have never been replicated. He has performed before Queen Elizabeth II and toured with top circuses throughout the world during the 1940s and 50s.
Today, the circus is owned and performed by sixth generation family members, traveling throughout the United States for the past two years. Prior to this, Jeane Ybarra said the show traveled throughout Mexico, Portugal, Canada and Brazil.

RSPCA attacks council's lifting of circus ban

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate used his casting vote to overturn the ban
(ABC TV News - file image)
from:  abc.net.au.

Jan 31, 2013
The RSPCA says the Gold Coast City Council has taken a step into the past by overturning a ban on circuses with exotic animals on council-owned land.
Mayor Tom Tate used his casting vote to overturn the ban after the vote was deadlocked at 7-7.
Councillor Tracey Gilmore was not at the meeting.
RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty says the organisation is not suggesting people who have exotic animals in circuses deliberately mistreat them.
"We're simply saying that in this day and age, to go and see animals exhibit unnatural behaviours and try to even vaguely think that way you're learning about the habits of those exotic animals is just ridiculous," he said.
Mr Beatty says the council decision is disappointing.
"The fact that animals are transported around the country in what you can really only call the beast wagons is just not acceptable," he said.
"Obviously they can't go back to the wild per se, but they can at least in this day and age go to open plains zoos where people, children in particular, can go and see them exhibit their normal behaviours."
A number of people gathered outside the council chambers yesterday urging councillors to maintain the ban.
Cr Dawn Crichlow says the ban made no sense.
She says circuses have been allowed on private and government-owned land and the people have voted with their feet.
"We can't put bans on circuses on private property, so the circuses could still come to town but we had a ban just on council land, the ratepayers own that land, the ratepayers clearly said we want the circuses on our land, so I'm very pleased with the result," she said.
"After we put the ban on, Stardust Circus came to state-owned Parklands ... that was September 2011 and thousands went to that.
"Look, let the people decide whether or not they want to go to a circus."

Cirque Italia's "Aquatic Spectacular" show has extended its run in Kissimmee by a week. The show, which has pitched its big top on Vine Street, will now give performances through Feb. 10.

The "Aquatic Spectacular" stage holds 35,000 gallons of water for its performers' feats. Ariel acts are a key part of the show, which features hand balancing, contortionists and a high-wire routine.

"Cirque Italia is not an average or traditional circus," says producer Chanté DeMoustes. "It's more of a Broadway meets Bellagio that travels from city to city."

Circus ringmaster hopes to have audience dancing in Greensboro

Andre McClain
from: times-news.com
By Charity Apple / Times-News
January 31, 2013
Andre McClain, the newest ringmaster with The Greatest Show On Earth, likens the experience to what he knows best — training horses.
“I took it by the reins, like a horse. It was challenging at first, like any new experience, but I’m still making it mine,” he said. “I feel like it’s starting to gel now.”
This is the first time in more than 100 years that Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus have had an equestrian ringmaster, McClain said. Known as “America’s Favorite Cowboy,” McClain and his Appaloosa Comanche will take center stage when the newest show “Built To Amaze” (Red Tour), visits the Greensboro Coliseum for the first time Feb. 6-10.
This show, he explained, is a behind-the-scenes look at “literally building the Greatest Show On Earth — minute by minute.”
Dump trucks and hard hats worn by performers are part of the nonstop performance, which includes a gender competition between the boys (Team Blue) and girls (Team Pink).
“I’m a neutral observer,” McClain added. “I serve as the referee, if you will.”
The competition element of the show heightens the audience participation “and it teaches everyone, even the youngest circus-goer, that anything you do requires teamwork,” he added.
McClain is close friends with Jonathan Lee Iverson, the first African-American ringmaster in the circus’ history. McClain also served as Iverson’s understudy for 10 years.
“Me and Jonathan are like brothers. When I told him about being ringmaster, he said ‘Andre, I’m not worried about you. You know what to do,’ ” he said. “I consider it an honor to be allowed into this circle of professional performers. Everyone gets along. We are a city without a zip code.
Every ringmaster, McClain said, has his own niche.
“I try to get everybody in the crowd dancing,” he said.
This is his 11th year with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey and although he never imagined being in a circus, much less becoming ringmaster, he said every night is a unique, thrilling experience.
“In all these years, this has not changed for me. Right before I go out on stage, I’m always nervous until the lights hit. It’s like the first show, every show. I just accept it and appreciate it,” he said.
