SANATOGA PA – The circus is coming back to town.
The South Carolina-based Lewis and Clark Circus, which last appeared in Sanatoga during 2010 and was forced by bad weather to cancel a return visit in 2011, will be the guest of the Sanatoga Fire Company for big-top shows on June 20-21 (2013; Thursday and Friday), accompanied by rides and other entertainment. The fire company is sponsoring its performances as a fund-raiser, President Don Woodley Jr. said Tuesday (June 4).

Shows will be offered at 5 and 7:30 p.m. each night on the lot behind the firehouse, 2222 E. High St., and all children age 14 and younger will be admitted free when accompanied by a ticket-purchasing adult. Adult tickets cost $10 in advance and can be bought at the firehouse on Monday and Thursday evenings: June 6, 10, 13, and 17. The same tickets purchased on show days will cost $15, Woodley said.

The circus’ performers and its management know Sanatoga well. Lewis and Clark staged shows outside Sunnybrook Ballroom during June 2009 and 2010, and were scheduled to arrive for two days at the fire company property during 2011. Firefighters had invested heavily to promote its appearance.

Only days before those performances, however, a wind storm struck Seward PA – just north of Johnstown – where the circus was running on behalf of that village’s fire company. Five people, including three children, were accidentally injured when the wind collapsed the giant-sized red-and-yellow tent, trapping them and others inside. Wind speed at the height of the storm, which also included hail in some places, was estimated to exceed 60 mph.

Management acknowledged it would be unable to meet its 2011 commitment in Sanatoga, and the fire company could not schedule for 2012, Woodley said. This year, however, the circus made contact and set a date.

Circus wars break out in Tunbridge Wells

CIRCUS wars have broken out in Tunbridge Wells over what one owner has called "a complete rip-off of our name".

Tony Hopkins, who has run long-established Billy Smart's Circus under licence since 2003, was incensed to learn that rival Billi Smiles Circus was appearing in Tunbridge Wells this week, a month before his own show was due to arrive.
"It's wrong to have picked a name which is so similar," said Mr Hopkins. "Even some of our own people have been taken in - I've had old friends ringing up from all over the country asking where I am, it's ridiculous. And that means the public are bound to be misled too."

He warned: "Instead of bringing their kids to a famous circus with years of tradition behind it, they'll be buying tickets for a show that's only been going for a couple of months."
However, Deyvid Kirilov of Bulgarian Billi Smiles Circus, currently performing at Colebrook Park in Longfield Road, Tunbridge Wells, insisted: "The similarity in the name is just a coincidence. My mum's name is Billi and our aim is to make kids smile, so that's where our name came from.

"It's bad timing for Billy Smart's that they're coming here too, I had no idea. But perhaps our being here first will be good advertising for them too."

However Mr Hopkins, whose circus opens at Dunorlan Park on July 9, was having none of it.

"Of course they did it deliberately, and I know the Smart family have sent them a solicitor's letter about it."

But Mr Kirilov, running his first solo show after training with his parents' long-established Big Kid Circus, said: "No-one's called me, we haven't received any letters."

Curled up and around a large hoop suspended from the ceiling, Richmond’s Angela McIlroy Wagar is an elegant, tangled mass of legs and arms.

As she gently starts to rotate in her perch, her sleek limbs gracefully unfurl to their natural length. And when they reach the limit of her lean, five-foot-nine inch frame she undergoes a complex, choreographed movement, arching her back in a reverse with such ease and control it would make a chiropractor sob.

Seeing Angela’s performance, it’s not a surprise where the 16-year-old, Grade 10 student from McMath secondary is performing — the Vancouver Circus School (VCS). Located on the upper floor of the New Westminster Public Market building, it is a playground for the dabblers as well as the serious who have aspirations ranging from a simple bounce on the trampoline to the contortions Angela undertakes without the slightest expression of effort creasing her face.

Three days a week, she’s at the school, twisting, climbing and bending, all in pursuit of her dream to one day become a professional circus performer with a famous company such as Cirque du Soleil. It’s an aspiration that began at an early age, says her mother, Valerie Wager, and is well on the road to being realized. Angela was accepted by the National Circus School in Montreal where, starting in August, she will begin completing her high school studies, which will include intensive circus training.

'A Circus Life' documentary celebrates parade, craftsmen behind it
from: jsonline.com
by — Chris Foran
June 6, 2013
It's probably the closest you'll get to seeing the Great Circus Parade — for a while, anyway.
"A Circus Life," a new documentary by Gene Gamache and Kirk G. Carter, recounts the efforts of Charles "Chappie" Fox and the craftsmen at the Circus World Museum in Baraboo to rescue, restore and put on display hundreds of historic circus wagons for the museum and for the Great Circus Parade.
The movie is showing at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Landmark Oriental Theatre, 2230 N. Farwell Ave. Tickets are available at the theater box office and on its website.

Gamache, an award-winning editor of movie trailers, will lead a Q&A after the screening. "A Circus Life" is his second Wisconsin-connected movie. He also made a 1996 documentary on Harry Houdini.
The Great Circus Parade was held in downtown Milwaukee from 1963 to '73, and returned in 1980, running until 2005, when financial support for the parade crumbled. The parade had a final encore in 2009.
Fox, the parade's longtime champion and Circus World's first director, died in 2003.
The Circus World Museum itself is battling for survival. A recent plan to transfer the museum's operations from the foundation that runs it to the state Historical Society and provide it with additional funding was shot down last month in the Legislature.

The circus returns to In the House Festival
Musicians, acrobats, shadow puppets invade homes and backyards on Commercial Drive

PETER Boulanger isn't sure whether his circus company's 34-foot tall marionette will make it to the In the House Festival.

But the Underground Circus's 23-foot-tall freestanding tower will definitely dominate a backyard near Commercial Drive for the grand finale of the 10th anniversary festival that will animate homes and yards June 7 to 9.

"It's a very fun festival. We've done it a few times and it's always been a great time," says Boulanger, cofounder and co-director of Underground Circus.

"For us (the best part is) being with the public and being part of such a wonderfully iconic Vancouver organization. They've created all sorts of weird little quirky things over the years and we love being part of that kind of stuff," Boulanger says. "We are pretty much the top corporate circus company in town, which means most of time people don't see our work. So it is fun to be able to say, 'Hey look. We exist.'"

Much of the aerial acrobatics in the grand finale show are set to music from B.C., including the crooning of Michael Buble, the folk music of Pied Pumkin and 1980s pop hits of Doug and the Slugs.

"We'll be showcasing a lot of our unique (acrobatic) apparatuses and it's kind of fun to be doing that with the work of B.C. musicians," Boulanger says.

Underground Circus celebrated its own 10th anniversary this year. Boulanger and his wife, Ninon Parent, studied at the National Circus School in Montreal, toured with Cirque du Soleil for a couple of years and then decided to settle near Burnaby, where Boulanger grew up.

Rich history at agricultural fairs

 from:  chathamdailynews.com
By Kim Cooper, Special to QMI Agency
Thursday, June 6, 2013
Do you realize how fortunate we are to live in such an amazing agricultural area? The business of agriculture takes a lifetime to learn about and for most of us that is not possible. For those of us raised in the city, we have a unique opportunity to learn more about the agricultural sector and their lifestyle through a number of various events and celebrations. One way is by attending agricultural fairs.

These agricultural fairs have a long history. There were two types of ancient fairs: trade shows and festivals. From the biblical "Fairs of Tyre" to Sturbridge Fair in medieval England, fairs were used as market places and carnivals. In the 1700's the British crossed the agricultural improvement society with the traditional trade fair/carnival and agricultural fairs were born.

These agricultural fairs were transplanted to the colonies by the earliest British settlers, and the concept of fairs soon flourished in North America. In Canada, the first agricultural society was formed in 1765 in Nova Scotia. Ontario followed in 1792 with the Agricultural Society of Upper Canada based at Niagara-on-the-Lake. From the Ontario strongholds, the concept of agricultural fairs spread west with the early settlers.

The system of agricultural societies and their fairs spread all over Ontario in the 1800s. They were organized by county and township groups and at one time numbered over 500 in Ontario alone. While agricultural societies used many methods to improve agriculture and the rural lifestyle, their most enduring legacy was the agricultural fair.

Industrial exhibitions and festivals came and went, but the fairs carried on. Agricultural fairs soon became part of Ontario's (and Canada's) culture, and they remain a very important part of our present society.

Ontario fairs have changed since their inception, but they still carry on their mandate of promoting agriculture and the rural lifestyle.

Here is a list of agricultural fairs in our region. Most of these events are held later on in the year, but there are some early fairs you might want to know about. These fairs are listed in order according to their 2013 dates. For a list of all the Ontario agricultural fairs, you can go to this website: (www.ontariofairs.org)

From Western Austrailia--
A number of circus animals have been recaptured after breaking loose in the middle of Broome.
Cows, camels, llamas, horses and donkeys escaped from their temporary enclosure on Male Oval this morning after a fence post came loose.
It took Circus Royale staff about 10 minutes to round up the animals as onlookers watched in amusement.
Circus Royale spokesman Daman Syred says the animals may have been trying to take advantage of Broome's wet weather.
"We had a cow and a few of our horses decided to go for a run through some of the puddles that have formed here on the grounds in Broome, so yeah they had a bit of a run around on the oval," he said.

A Circus Life film
from: expressmilwaukee.com
June 6, 2013

Normal life paused a century ago in many places when the circus came to town. The performers trouped down Main Street in a cavalcade of wagons heavily carved and gilded. By the 1950s those rolling sculptures were put to pasture, rotting in barns or turned into chicken coops. Wisconsin’s Chappie Fox, who made his life’s work out of rescuing those wagons and preserving them at Baraboo’s Circus World Museum, is the subject of A Circus Life. The documentary is also an informative look at an era when the traveling circus was part of the common cultural currency of America. (David Luhrssen)

Teen girl injured on bungee jump at Riverton fair

from:  trib.com
By BENJAMIN STORROW Star-Tribune staff writer
June 04, 2013
Fremont County,CO--The bungee jump at the Fremont County Fairgrounds was not inspected by fair or local officials prior to an accident that sent a 16-year-old girl to a Denver hospital with a serious head injury Friday.
Wyoming has no statewide regulations governing ride safety at fairs and carnivals, an absence that left some local officials wondering Tuesday if more safety measures were needed as the summer carnival season approaches.
“As far as I know there is no inspection that goes on here, at all,” said Riverton City Manager Steven Weaver. “There is no inspection from the city, or any permit from the city to allow them to do that.”
The girl, who was not identified, was injured when she hit the padding at the base of the bungee jump and then rolled off the contraption, striking her head on the asphalt surface below, said Fremont County Fair and Rodeo Director Barney Cosner. The girl was in stable condition, Riverton Police Capt. C.T. Smith said Tuesday.
Fair officials were unable to determine why she rolled off the pad, which is typically used to propel riders into the air, Cosner said. They ultimately decided to take it down and the ride was shipped back to the manufacturer on Saturday, he said.
The Riverton fair, dubbed the “Fremont County Spring Spectacular,” opened Friday and ran through Sunday. The carnival’s operator, North Star Amusement, did not return a request for comment.
Counties and municipalities are given the option of conducting safety inspections under state statute, but they are not mandatory.
Criss Crozier, executive secretary of the Wyoming Association of Fairs, said Wyoming does not have statewide regulations relating to ride safety.
“It’s different in each county,” she said.
Cosner said Fremont County fair officials did not check the jump prior to the accident. Such inspections are now left to the carnival operator, he said. Cosner was unsure if increased regulations would increase ride safety.

When a Circus Clown Moves from the Bright Spotlight to the Glow of Film: 'Pierre Etaix'

Pierre Étaix in Yoyo (1965)
from: popmatters.com
By Michael Buening
6 June 2013
Last October the Film Forum in New York City screened the five features and three shorts that were created by the French film director and comic actor, Pierre Étaix. (The series was partially cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy.)  Film nerds were salivating. If you haven’t heard of Étaix you are not alone. His films have rarely been screened since their creation, due to a long legal fight with his distribution company, which has led to his movies being more or less scrubbed from film history. But the legal issues have finally been resolved, new digital masters were created from the damaged negatives in 2010, and after being shown at the Film Forum, they are now being released as a box set by Criterion.
The story of the film’s loss and rediscovery makes for a fascinating and attractive story. In addition to his work as a director, Étaix was also a skilled circus clown and draftsmen and worked for a time as a gag writer and set designer for Jacques Tati. Étaix is a close friend to Jerry Lewis. Most of his film’s scripts were co-written by Jean-Claude Carrière, a hugely important screenwriter in European film from the ‘60s until today. In the general enthusiasm at discovering a potentially forgotten master there has been a bit of over-adulation. Étaix is not Buster Keaton or Jacques Tati, and I don’t think any of his movies could be called masterpieces. But some of them are very good, they are imaginative and carefully composed, with a distinctive and accomplished vision that deserves rediscovery.

MENDON — The Mendon Lions Club will host the Kelly-Miller Circus once again this month, in an effort to raise funds for the club.
The circus will be in town on Tuesday, June 25, and will host two shows.
Tom Irons, a member of the Lions Club, said this is the sixth year the club has hosted a circus day.
"In previous years, the money raised has been used for different things around town, like the pavilion at Memorial Field," Irons said. "This year, the money will be going to Lions charities, which primarily deal with eye-related issues.
"We're able to raise several thousand dollars each time we have a circus," he added.
The circus this year will feature numerous animals, including elephants, tigers and camels. There will also be a free tent-raising that morning.
Irons said the turnout at the circus has been quite good.
"The circus does very well in Mendon," he said. "Last year, they said, with the town before us, the tent was only half-full. Mendon sold out both shows."
He said about 2,000 people showed up last year.
The circus will hold its tent-raising at 8 a.m. on June 25 at the lot at the intersection of Milford Street (Route 16) and North Avenue. The shows will be held at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Colorado Springs---The circus is coming to town this week, with a few changes that our viewers have been asking about.
We've learned that this year there will be no animal walk as part of the circus activities. According to a spokesperson for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Built To Amaze! show, coming to the Springs on Thursday, this year's animal walk will not take place.
Instead, circusgoers are invited to participate in the All Access Pre-show. All ticket holders are invited to join the fun and meet the Built to Amaze! international cast of performers as they prepare for the show. Additionally, ticket holders can gaze at the animals involved in the circus by taking a trip by the Animal Open House before each show.
Other activities include a dance party, the opportunity to try on custom designed costumes, learn circus skills and witness and win a one of a kind masterpiece created by Asia, Ringling Bros. own painting pachyderm.
Performers include Andre McClain, Ringmaster and cowboy; award-winning comedic animal duo Alex and Irina Emelin of Russia; the Tower Tumblers and the King Charles Troupe of unicyclists from New York City.

Milford, CT--Circuses have long been a source of amusement and entertainment for young and old alike.
They also have long been a point of contention between animal rights activists and the people who run the shows. Debates and studies can be found online, some supporting the animal right’s proponents, and others defending the treatment of circus animals.
The show, and the debate, will be forefront in Milford next week when Cole Brothers comes to town with its elephants, tigers and other circus acts: In Defense of Animals will be there too, and is planning a protest on circus nights.
“Classic Circus, American-style, complete with elephants, tigers, thrilling aerialists and acrobats, mystifying magic and hilarious clowns” will appear in Milford at the Westfield Connecticut Post mall from Monday, June 10, through Wednesday, June 12, with two Cole Brothers shows each day, at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m., according to a circus advertisement.
The show features “Princess Vicenta’s astonishing assemblage of white tigers, awesome elephants with special guest star siblings, Babies Val and Hugo.”
There will be daredevils, high wire acts, dogs, a human cannonball and clowns, the advertisement continues.
Standing outside, likely at a distance as they have in past years, will be the people holding signs and urging others to put their wallets away and skip going to the circus.
The protesters will include people like Milford resident Lorrie Davies, who is passionate about protecting animals and fighting for their well-being.
