When you see a show you want it to be something you don’t want to take your eyes off of! You want to see a show that’s fun and exciting, with non-stop action! You want to see “FUNAMUBLA”! You’ll see choreographed aerial acts, high wire walkers, stunt motorcycle riders in a “sphere of fear” going 55 mph in circles and upside down, an incredible trampoline act and a lot more!
FUNAMBULA is derived from the Latin term funambulus, meaning rope dancer or rope walker. The show is about both physical balance and the balance of life, and how strength and agility play their respective parts. These illustrations spring to life courtesy of a fleet of international performers, from tightrope walkers and accomplished aerialists, to contortionists, trampoline jumpers and a world champion rhythmic gymnast.

The Mederios Troupe, including Andrey Medeiros (top), Widny Neves (standing), and Viktoriya Medeiros

They didn’t put it on their wedding registry, but Andrey and Viktoriya Medeiros couldn’t have been more thrilled with their present — a high-wire motorcycle act.
It was given to them by the owner of the circus where they met and married, and they’ve put the experience to good use. You’ll be able to see just how good when Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus’ Dragons comes to American Airlines Center, July 31-Aug. 11.
“He says, ‘I have something really exciting and dangerous for you’ and, of course, he knows us and what we prefer because we are circus performers and we love to entertain,” Andrey says by phone from the circus’s stop in Houston.
“We made an act together. I love it,” says Viktoriya.
And yes, this is how cute they are. Their sentences overlap all through the conversation.
Andrey, who is from Brazil, is a fourth-generation circus performer. He met Viktoriya, a Bulgarian gymnast new to the circus, when he was performing with a troupe he’d been a part of for 19 years. When the troupe was ready to leave, he had to “choose the job or choose the love,” he says.
He chose the love, and now he has Viktoriya; their 7-year-old son, Kristofer; and two acts that they have perfected together under the Medeiros Troupe banner. One features a 1,000-pound motorcycle that Andrey spins 360 degrees on a high wire 50 feet in the air. The other is a double hair-hang act in which Viktoriya and the third member of the troupe, Widny Neves, rise 35 feet and juggle, flip and spiral down silk chiffon on the strength of their long, dark hair.
Viktoriya says the secret to keeping her hair strong enough for the act is to eat right, exercise and treat her hair with egg and avocado. Andrey says the other secret is her strong will.
“This is why women have the babies. Men couldn’t do it.”

ELEPHANT BURIED?

A circus elephant buried beneath an Albury bowling green?

July 27, 2013
THE “elephant in the room” of Winsor Park Bowling Club’s history could finally be uncovered when its old green is dug up next week.
The Albury club’s ground has long been rumoured to be the burial ground for a circus elephant that visited in the years before the bowling club was established in the 1950s.
This month, a crew from Albury Demolitions has been knocking down the 1956 clubhouse and it has heard from several old-timers about the elephant bones that are meant to be in the ground.
On June 18, 1943, Wirth’s Circus, which had its own circus train, was forced to travel from Melbourne to Sydney by road rather than rail as the railway was inaccessible due to World War II.
They travelled the distance by wagons drawn by elephants before arriving in Sydney on July 24.
Circuses were held on the site in the late 1930s and early 1940s before the block became a bowling park for people who worked on the Albury railway.
Albury councillor Ross Jackson, who is also an administrator at the railway station, said there were conflicting reports in newspapers at the time about how many elephants were in the convoy.
“There were reports of there being five elephants and then seven,” he said.
“It’s possible one could have died on the way.”
The rumour had been circulating since the bowling club was built and some said the reason the No.1 green drained so well was because of the elephant buried below.
Cr Jackson had a theory the circus would not have been willing to advertise the death of one of the elephants.
A circus in Sydney at the time had its licence revoked because of the high number of tiger attacks.
“The Wirth’s Circus wouldn’t have wanted to risk having their licence revoked as well,” he said.
Cr Jackson said if a record could not be found, it did not mean that it did not happen.
“Hopefully something will be found when they start digging,” Cr Jackson said.

VIET NAM CIRCUS

Vietnamese circus a success overseas, flounders at home
VietNamNet Bridge – Lang Toi Circus, a highly-regarded performance troupe which has played many foreign stages, faces difficulties in attracting audiences at home.

After four years performing abroad, in places such as France, Belgium, China, Hong Kong, Greece, Hungary, Spain and the Netherlands, the Vietnam Circus Federation’s artists who took part in the circus act are struggling to earn a living after their return to Vietnam.
Their overseas tour has been over for around a year, but the troupe has yet to perform domestically due to lack of an audience, substandard stage equipment and high ticket prices.
People’s Artist Vu Ngoan Hop, director of the federation said, “Our biggest obstacle to holding a domestic performance is a lack of proper stage equipment."
According to Hop, they had planned to organise two shows in August in Hanoi, at the Au Co Vietnamese Cultural Centre. This may have been a good chance for the troupe to transfer some of their experience in performance and stage management to the federation.
“We’re mulling over a plan to hold Lang Toi Circus performance once per week at the centre or other location but it’s really difficult to make it come true. While the circus act requires highly standard infrastructure for performances, currently no stages in Vietnam would meet all the requirements to house a performance a week,” Hop commented.
In order to arrange a domestic performance for Lang Toi, the federation was compelled to cancel some traditional acts so as to encourage artists to join the programme.
However, after over one year with none of these plans for a performance coming to fruition, Lang Toi is in danger of fading from public consciousness.
The situation has forced some members of the troupe to go back to more traditional circus acts to earn a living.
Artist Cao Xuan Hien said, “I decided to give up Lang Toi and cooperate with some old friends to resume some traditional circus acts.”
Some other artists find it difficult to accept these more modest performance fees, only about one twentieth of their overseas payments.
Vu Ngoan Hop said, “Lang Toi was arranged with modern equipment but is culturally Vietnamese. Its major audiences are foreign people in Vietnam instead of Vietnamese people. In order to attract more audiences we’re considering adjusting our ticket prices."

KELLY- MILLER CIRCUS COOKHOUSE

Circus food is no sideshow stunt!

The opening strains of “The Lion King” soundtrack waft from the circus tent next door, signaling that the clowns have finished a round of pratfalls, the fire eater is breathing flames and the star aerialist is preparing to spin — hanging by her teeth from a bit attached to her trapeze — near the dizzying heights of the big top.

The musical cue means it’s almost intermission.

“It’s my show time,” says the aptly named Jeremiah Cook, a 23-year-old Texan.

His stage is the Kelly Miller Circus cookhouse, a semitrailer parked this summer afternoon on the outskirts of Olney, a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C. From its 30-by-8-foot galley kitchen, Cook produces at least two meals a day for up to 96 people, including cast, crew and their families.
It’s a numbers game, a juggling act, and Cook is ready.
He opens the oven of a six-burner U.S. Range and extracts two industrial-size pans of cornbread, replacing them with two more pans of batter. Minutes later, while he stirs a huge pot of chopped chicken breast in lemon-caper sauce, a clown in greasepaint appears at the serving window.

“What’ve you got today?” Steve Copeland asks. He grins when Cook loads an extra piece of cornbread onto a plate heaped with chicken, rice and mixed vegetables. Copeland joins a handful of other diners already settled in the dining tent.
To audiences, American circus food means cotton candy, peanuts and other concession fare. To the cast, crew and their families, it could be anything from burgers to beef teriyaki with broccoli, from pancakes to panna cotta — from the mundane to the magnificent.

He soon excelled and expanded his repertoire to include stilt walking, bareback horse riding, fire eating, clowning & even a became a crocodile trainer, as explained in his recent biography ‘Confessions of a Showman – My life in the circus’.

HARRINGTON — The heat finally subsided at the Delaware State Fair on Thursday. With temperatures only reaching the mid-70s, it was a break from the rest of the event when highs have been in the 90s.

Circus Hollywood, sponsored by Sussex County Federal Credit Union has performed at least twice daily at the fair. Thursday was cool enough for the crowds to enjoy themselves under the big-top. The show features acrobats, trained animals, stunts and clowns.

A large line had formed to enter the tent more than 30 minutes before the gates were opened for Thursday afternoon’s performance.

Before the show and between each act, the clown entertained the crowd and even convinced some members of the audience to go on stage and participate in various skits.

The circus officially began with a three person tango, with impossibly quick costume changes on stage.

One of the crowd’s favorites was a motorcycle stunt. Two men on motorcycles drove around a spherical metal cage in all directions, even upside down as a woman stood inside the cage, between the two drivers.

After several minutes of a flawless performance that kept the audience on the edge of their seats, both the drivers and woman exited the cage injury free to the crowd’s amazement.

Two acrobats performed more than 20 feet above the audience with no safety net. One acrobat used a hoop and the other used ropes. They demonstrated their strength and flexibility by performing moves, hanging by as little as one arm or foot.

Animal performers included three dogs and one horse. The dogs did tricks such as walking on their hind legs, climbing ladders and racing through an obstacle course with no prompting from a trainer.

The horse danced to the music and jumped to a performer’s commands. The animals seemed to be as well trained as their human counterparts.

Today and Saturday, the circus will have performances at 12:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Carrying signs and distributing literature that described what some consider the horrors suffered by circus animals, protestors outside the Cole Bros. Circus tent in Greenport sparked controversy on Wednesday.
The small group of animal advocates, representing the Long Island Orchestrating for Nature (LION) animal rights group, turned out at the Polo Grounds in Greenport to protest the conditions under which animals are allegedly kept in the circus.

Madison Square Garden Is Told to Move
from:  nytimes.com
By CHARLES V. BAGLI
Published: July 24, 2013
Madison Square Garden, home to the Knicks, the Rangers, the Ice Capades, the circus and the “Fight of the Century” between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in 1971, received an eviction notice of sorts on Wednesday.

The New York City Council notified the arena that it has 10 years to vacate its 45-year-old premises and find a new home, the Garden’s fifth since it opened in 1879.
By a vote of 47 to 1, the Council voted to extend the Garden’s special operating permit for merely a decade — not in perpetuity, as the owners of the Garden had requested, or 15 years, as the Bloomberg administration had intended.
