A PORT Fairy Lions Club decision to expand its annual Easter Fair was welcomed with an overwhelming response from the public on Saturday.

The club’s annual auction and car boot sale grew into a village fair this year with entertainment, children’s activities and rides.

Co-ordinator Geoff Scott said Railway Place was a hive of activity. “It was fantastic. It was a really great day.”

A special attraction was the introduction of Port Fairy’s town crier, with Moyne Shire councillor Ralph Leutton stepping into the role for his first appearance. Dressed in theme, Cr Leutton is expected to field more inquiries for his talents in the future. “He did a great job,” Mr Scott said.

Other popular attractions were children’s face-painting, Irish dancing, horse rides, a jumping castle and roving clowns from the town’s theatre group.

Lions club members manned a spinning wheel for prizes of fresh prawns. Suppliers were unable to provide the usual prize of locally-caught crayfish this year so prawns were the alternative.

Bruce Lowenthal volunteered to auction a large range of pre-loved goods and many people took the opportunity to snap up a bargain. Additional money was raised in one of the club’s regular firewood raffles.

Mr Scott said the club had raised up to $6000 at previous Easter Fairs and was expecting to at least equal that amount.

“The attendance was unbelievable. It was a very busy time for the town with the number of people coming through for Easter.”

All proceeds will be donated to the Peter’s Project appeal supporting a south-west radiotherapy centre.

“Next year we’ll pick another charity and will probably get other groups involved with their own fund-raising,” Mr Scott said.
