THE Cebu City government is running after the producer of a circus show to make him pay P1.7 million in amusement taxes.
The City Treasurer’s Office sent a letter to Ericson Uy, one of the producers of the Great American Circus about the matter. The check he issued was not honored by the bank after Uy made a stop-payment order on the check.
City Treasurer Ofelia Oliva said that Uy gave a Chinatrust Bank and Veterans Bank checks amounting to P1.2 million but the banks returned the checks to CTO because of the stop payment order.
Since the show was already held, and tickets were sold, the producers should pay their tax obligations, she said.
“All of the Cebuanos cooperated. I hope they (the producers) also cooperate in paying their amusement tax,” Oliva said.
Based on the assessment by CTO, the Great American Circus, which held shows at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, earned P10.5 million and another P3.1 million on Jan. 11-12 at the Cebu City Coliseum.
Oliva said the show organizers were given a tax discount because of the resolution passed by the city council. Instead of a 30 percent amusement tax, they were only charged 10 percent of the income plus surcharges, which amounted to P1.7 million.
Oliva warned that if her office doesn’t receive the tax payment by Thursday next week, the city through the legal office would file a case of tax evasion against the organizers of the circus and void Uy’s business permit.
But Uy said the check he gave to CTO was just a guarantee that they would pay and that he was surprised when the CTO tried to encash the check.
“That is why I made the stop payment order,” Uy told Cebu Daily News.
He said he requested CTO for an appointment to count the ticket sales of the circus but the office was always busy. He said the CTO’s assessment of their event sales was not exact and that their sales was much lower.
“Ang kapait nila, ingnon lang ta, ayaw lang ug bayad kay ari lang napod ni kwaon sa imong ubang negosyo, “ Uy told CDN.
He clarified that he intends to pay the amusement tax first wants a sit-down meeting with Oliva to finalize the amount.
