GREENSBORO, VT – The applause has died away, the scent of popcorn is but a memory, and there’s no sign of the Big Top tent but a circle of sawdust; but Ed LeClair, Executive Director of Circus Smirkus, is ready to take a bow. The youth circus ended its season well in the black (no small feat for a nonprofit youth arts organization), is celebrating the launch of several special projects, and has a clown-trunkfull of plans for future.
“Every year we think we’ve put on the best show EVER, and this year was no different,” says LeClair. “As a company, we feel like that five-year-old who has just seen his first show: tired but happy, overwhelmed with joy and silliness, and a little sticky from all that cotton candy.” And, like a five-year-old fan, “we’ll take a rest and then dive back in, filled with ideas and fun,” he said.

The Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour is the name of the one-ring circus which showcases the talents of youth between the ages of 10 and 18, and travels the Northeast each summer. This year, the traveling circus performed 67 shows in 14 cities and towns, including five in Vermont (Greensboro, Essex, Manchester, Brattleboro and Montpelier) and one in nearby Hanover, NH. Other venues were in Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and upstate New York.
