Street theatre, martial arts action, acrobatics and death-defying motorcycling stunts in a giant metal globe - circuses aren’t what they used to be, and that’s no bad thing.
Manfeild Park Trust chief executive Heather Verry is looking forward to seeing a fast-paced and thrill-a-minute show when a travelling carnival visits, a first for the Feilding facility.
Zirka Circus, on site within the grass oval precinct from December 13-16, is of the modern ilk; a circus with purely human performers.
A show that is by, and for, the people has heartened Mrs Verry.
"Times have changed. Many people no longer feel comfortable seeing animals, particularly non-domesticated species, in circus acts and many countries, including England only last week, have banned their use.

"The Zirka circus comes to us with a fantastic reputation and a fresh outlook. We are sure that it will provide great family fun in the lead-up to Christmas."
The ensemble delivers a fast-paced show in the mould of the famous Cirque de Soleil, combining acrobatics, amazing stunts, funny acts and amazing illusions, all built into a captivating themed story.
The performance structure is influenced by wixua, a Chinese genre of martial arts-themed literature concerning fantasy swordplay, chivalry, and romance that has become popular in action games and films.
Zirka Circus managing director Jeni Hou says this year's big act and show finale is the "ball of death", where five motorcyclists speed around a metal cage.
"It's a very dangerous situation," Ms Hou said.

The 2012 show is far from being a repeat of last year’s well-received national tour, she reminded.
"We have all-new international performers with all-new acts, many of which have never been previously seen in New Zealand. The scary acts are scarier than before; the beautiful acts are more beautiful.
"We have an amazing young star who is not just an acrobat but a ballet dancer - when she combines these talents she is able to perform her ballet on a man’s shoulders. You have to see this act to believe it."
Ms Hou said Zirka was looking forward to being at Manfeild Park. "This is our first visit to Feilding and we are excited."
The circus has scheduled six shows, with afternoon and evening performances. Prices are advertised.
