'Traces' puts streetwise spin on traditional circus act

Some of my favorite childhood memories revolve around my family’s annual visits to Key West, Fla. After a full day of sun and surf, we would trek down to Mallory Square — a delightful stretch of pier populated by some of the world’s finest street performers. Acrobats, jugglers, high-wire acts — these bohemian buskers never failed to amaze and energize the crowd.
And while “Traces” offers a decidedly more urban twist than my favorite island retreat, there’s no mistaking the excitement surrounding this incredibly entertaining show from Canadian-based Les 7 Doigts de la Main — or 7 Fingers. Sitting in Jackson Hall at Tuesday’s opening night performance, I felt like a kid again.
Established in 2002, 7 Fingers quickly made a name for itself with a fast-paced, multifaceted approach to the traditional circus arts. With direction and choreography by founding directors Shana Carroll and Gypsy Snider, “Traces” is performed by Valérie Benoît-Charbonneau, Lucas Boutin, Matieu Cloutier, Matthew Greenfield, Bradley Henderson, LJ Marles and Philippe Normand-Jenny.
