The show will not go on for the Circus Spectacular, whose planned Convocation Center performance drew ire from some students and faculty members.
The George Carden circus visit — which had been set for March 4 — was canceled because of “inclement weather and travel conditions,” according to a Tuesday news release. A circus spokeswoman said there are no plans to stop by NIU in the future because it would not fit in the circus’ schedule.
Anthropology assistant professor Mitch Irwin created a petition in late January to cancel the Circus Spectacular because it featured animal performers. The petition had gathered more than 2,700 supporters by Tuesday evening, and on Sunday the Student Association Senate almost unanimously voted to release a resolution showing its opposition to the circus.
SA Senate Speaker Dillon Domke said he considers the cancellation not only a victory for SA, but for animals everywhere.

High-flying circus tale transcends real-life tragedy in Concordia production

For memory-searing examples of the fleeting nature of art, it’s tough to beat the intersection of violence and beauty that defined the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus in 1918. In the predawn hours of June 22 that year, it took roughly 35 seconds for close to 100 performers to die near Hammond, Ind. after a military transport train smashed into the rear of a Hagenbeck-Wallace train filled with a hodgepodge community of aerial artists, acrobats, strongmen, clowns and wild animals.

This week, Concordia University theater students will pay homage to the tragedy and Hagenbeck-Wallace’s long lost artists with a production of Chicago playwright Jay Torrence’s genre-defying play “Roustabout: The Great Circus Train Wreck.” Running Feb. 20-23 at Oak Park’s Madison Street Theatre, “Roustabout” is a potent mix of comedy and tragedy, clowning and tumbling, traditional dialogue, and fourth-wall busting audience engagement.

“The show is a combination of sincere and beautiful emotion mixed up with this cheeky, brutal sense of humor,” says director Halena Kays, who earned accolades earlier this season directing Torrence’s “Burning Bluebeard” for Chicago’s Ruffians theater company. Despite the tragedy that lies at the nexus of “Roustabout,” the piece is far from dismal, Kays said. “You certainly feel the emotions of loss with this piece,” she adds, “but I think the overriding energy guiding the show comes from the voices of the circus artists and their desire to connect with the audience and make something positive, and beautiful and inspiring.”

Torrence found his inspiration for “Roustabout” when he found himself at Showmen’s Rest in Forest Park’s Woodlawn Cemetery where many of train wreck’s performers lie in perpetuity. Since most of them were burned beyond recognition, the graves are simply marked “Unknown Male,” or “Unknown Female.” A few of the stones, Torrence recalls, are engraved with first names such as “Baldy,” “Smiley.”

Centara Maldives stages its own circus under the stars
from: incentivetravel.co.uk
February 18, 2014

Circus Under the Stars, staged regularly at Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives, has as its star someone who is very well known on the island, for she is also known to guests as Khun Goy, the resort’s leisure and entertainments manager. The show, which is held on the beach, includes breathtaking performances on aerial silks and the flying trapeze.

Khun Goy (the word “Khun” means “Miss”) first had the idea for putting on shows during the Christmas and New Year holidays, and they proved such a hit with guests that the shows are now regular features, provided free of charge under the resort’s cashless island programme.

Her real name is Thaiyara Suvan, and she is a super-fit 34-year-old from Bangkok who began her career in the performance and fitness coaching business twelve years ago. She developed an interest in working on the flying trapeze and from that began to work on her skills with various forms of the aerial arts.

Khun Goy has worked as an aerialist, coach, rigger and aerial choreographer for various circus companies as well as at corporate events, festivals, theatres and resorts.

She joined Centara Grand Island Resort in October of last year, where she teaches adults and children alike in aerobics, gymnastics and yoga, as well as organising entertainment events.

Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives has been named for the second year in succession as Leading Family Resort in the Maldives Travel Awards 2013.

“We are very much a resort for families, and putting on a regular event such as Circus Under the Stars is one of the reasons we have been voted as Leading Family Resort,” says the resort’s general manager, Voytek Klasicki. “This is good all-round entertainment, and everyone gets the opportunity to talk to Khun Goy about the skills and secrets of her act, which she is happy to share with all.”

Community leaders discuss chaos at Florida State Fair's Student Day
from Tampabay.com
By: Jessica Vander Velde
February 18, 2014
TAMPA — Some blamed the Sheriff's Office, some blamed the schools. Many blamed the parents of misbehaving youths. Others said Tampa's churches need to be more involved.

All agreed that mass chaos at the Florida State Fair cannot happen again.

About 100 people gathered at Beulah Baptist Institutional Church on Tuesday evening to learn more about the Feb. 7 scene at the fair from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Col. Jim Previtera described groups of more than 100 teens stampeding through the fair, breaking into fights and terrifying vendors.

He had videos that he said would speak for themselves. They would show the chaos, which prompted deputies to eject 99 people, arrest 12 and close the fair early on its first Friday, a free day for Hillsborough students.

But most clips, gathered off cellphone cameras, showed children laughing and running. One depicted a blurry fight. If they were misbehaving, the children did not appear violent in most of the footage. Some in the crowd at Tuesday's meeting grew restless.

"They're kids!" said Bridgette Welch, 44, who wondered if deputies were exaggerating.

Billed as "America's Favorite Big Top Circus," the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus will make a return trip to Johnstown in the spring.

The Hugo, Okla.-based, circus will perform Sunday, May 18, at Belt Field, with shows at 2 and 4:30 p.m. Downtown Johnstown Inc. is sponsoring the event. Belt Field, at 281 W. Jersey St., comprises 23 acres.

"We perform in smaller towns because they typically don't get to see a circus, and we really make sure our show is in the tradition of the American circus," Culpepper & Merriweather spokesperson Terri Moss said. "We want to provide quality family entertainment."

Culpepper & Merriweather last came to Johnstown in May 2012. Tickets, when announced on sale at local businesses, will cost $10 for adults and $6 for children ages 2-12, with children under age 2 admitted for free. On the day of the show, tickets will be $13 for adults and $7 for children.

"All three shows last time were sold out, and it was really nice to see happy families here have a good time," said Downtown Johnstown Inc. president Chris Speck, a former village council member. "It's great because residents don't have to drive to Columbus to see something like this."

The one-ring circus features a 90-minute performance that includes Miss Simone and her "breath-taking single trapeze," Miss Paulina's proud "Big & Little" prancing ponies, the Arlise Troupe on their unicycles, Natilie's American Eskimo Escapades and Miss April and her Rola Bola. The performances also include jungle cats Soloman, Delilah and Francis, with trainer Trey Key, Moss said.

Between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., residents are invited to watch the raising of the big-top tent, which can seat 600-800 guests, and stay for a free tour of the grounds.

Moss said it provides a rare face-to-face opportunity to learn about the history of the circus and how trainers care for the different animals in the show.

"This has really become popular when we arrive in town," Moss said. "It really gives people a chance to see what we do."

Culpepper& Merriweather has been featured on National Geographic's Explorer TV series, Entertainment Tonight and, most recently, "On the Road with Circus Kids," a Nickelodeon special.

According to the Culpepper & Merriweather website, it had very humble beginnings.

Robert Johnson, Jim Hebert and Curtis Cainan started a small show in 1985 and relied on donations. Gradually, they were able to add employees, equipment and animals.

Until 2001, the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus was based in Queen Creek, Ariz., when new ownership moved its headquarters to Hugo, deep in the Red River Valley.

Hugo is known as "Circus City, USA." Culpepper & Merriweather is the 20th circus to call Hugo home since 1941.

Downtown Johnstown Inc., with more than 50 members, works to deliver entertainment to the community. The organization sponsors the annual Cupola Classic Cruise-in in September and a Labor Day flea market, among other events.

Sumner County Fair moves to June
Organizers hope earlier date brings more visitors, cooler weather

The 69th annual Sumner County Fair will run June 23-28 at the Gallatin fairgrounds. This year's fair will have a new midway.

Feb. 17, 2014
Gallatin,TN--The Ferris wheel will be turning a month and a half earlier this year.

After taking place in early August for 68 years, the 69th annual Sumner County Fair is scheduled for June 23-28, a cooler period likely to attract more people with fewer school conflicts, event board members say.

The fair attracts 15,000 people on average from Sumner and beyond.

Attendance at the fair has plummeted over the years as the school start date has been pushed into early August.

“But in June, they won’t have to think about school,” said Jimmy Moore, the fair’s new president. “They will be more free, and they will be looking for something to do. Our fair is going to be one of the earliest fairs in Tennessee, and it will help the attendance. It will be a win-win situation for the fair and for the people.”

Holding the fair in August also hindered the Fairest of the Fair contest as some girls, who otherwise would have participated, had already gone to college. To participate, on the day of the event contestants must have reached their 16th birthday, but not their 21st birthday by Jan. 31, 2015, fair secretary Connie Gaither said.

“That cut our pageant in half because those are the girls who have been participating for years and they go to college, and we were losing them,” said Gaither, who helps run the contest she won in 1969.

New carnival planned
With cooler June temperatures, organizers also expect more participation in other pageants, such as the baby contest as young children won’t get irritated because of the hot weather.

Organizers are also hoping a revamped midway will further draw more people. Clanton, Ala.-based Kissel Entertainment will set up fair rides after Gibsonton, Fla.-based Myers International Midways Inc. retired from the local event.

“The new carnival, they’re young, fired-up professionals,” Gaither said. “There will be new and additional rides for younger and older children. We’re really excited.”

Circus Oz puts on a show with plenty of altitude

“From the Ground Up” was inspired by classic black-and-white photographs of construction workers balancing atop steel girders.
From: Bostob Globe
By Karen Campbell, GLOBE CORRESPONDENT
  FEBRUARY 17, 2014
High-energy, fast-paced and fueled by live rock ’n’ roll, Circus Oz has been called “a little naughty, a little nice, a little death defying.” When Australia’s National Circus makes its Celebrity Series debut this week with “From the Ground Up,” this feisty little troupe from Melbourne will bring acrobats, jugglers, aerialists, an irreverent clown, and a magician who can’t seem to get anything right, all of whom also play instruments and contribute to the show’s driving musical score. “From the Ground Up” was inspired by classic black-and-white photographs of construction workers balancing atop steel girders, and the show’s striking centerpiece is a bright red swinging steel beam that facilitates all manner of daredevil stunts and gags. Circus Oz has performed in 26 countries over five continents. The Globe caught up with the company’s artistic associate and tour director, Ed Boyle, who spoke from a tour stop in California.

Q. What makes Circus Oz different from other small animal-free, rock ’n’ roll circuses, like Cirque Éloize and Les 7 Doigts de la Main?

A. Circus Oz has always been about people who wanted to try and change the world for the better, and we’re very committed to equality and diversity. The company was created by artists [who] found their political message got across far more poetically when people were hanging upside down or swinging off things, and to this day it is run by artists, so it’s a very different psychology from many other contemporary companies. People are drawn to the core values of the company and what it represents, so there’s a constant pool of wonderful artists who continue to support the company.

The Circus Spectacular will not come to the Convocation Center if the Student Association Senate has its way.
SA Senate decided on a new Board of Elections Committee as well as a resolution to show the Senate does not support the Circus Spectacular coming to NIU. The Senate voted during its 6 p.m. Sunday meeting in the Sky Room of the Holmes Student Center.

During the meeting, Otis Buckley, Green Paws Environmental Alliance vice president, was invited to speak about the Circus Spectacular, a group bringing human and animal performers to the Convocation Center on March 4. Buckley said NIU President Doug Baker was presented with a petition that had more than 2,600 signatures from students, faculty members and other members of the community who feel having the circus come to NIU would be a bad idea.

“It has been proven that these are the things that this particular circus is doing, has done and continues to do,” Buckley said.

Ticket Down announces that they have reduced prices across the board on all Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus tickets. Tickets for the Ringling Bros. circus are generally quite reasonable. This well known secondary ticket exchange has extended their customer appreciation promo code DISCOUNT for added savings.
The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is an American based circus company which was formed as a merger between a circus company formed by James Anthony and Barnum and Circus also known as Ringling Brothers Circus. After this merger, one of the Ringling brothers decided that instead of organizing the circus in portable tents, it should be organized in places like sports stadiums that already have sitting capacity and thus can provide better sitting arrangements for spectators.
The history of the circus links back to Dan Castello, who was eager to set up his own circus company for which he wanted Barnum to lend not only his name but also financial backing so that the circus could begin without further delay. Barnum agreed with Castello and as a result, P.T. Barnum’s “Greatest Show on Earth” was organized. On the other side, Bailey along with James. E. Cooper joined hands to set up a circus business which soon became one of the top rivals of Barnum. This competition was the result of Columbia’s birth which was said to be the first birth of an elephant in the United States. This baby elephant was born to Babe and Mandarin and several people were eager to see Columbia and as a result of this, Bailey’s sales went up. Barnum, after all this, decided to buy Columbia and eventually agreed to arrange a combined show in the late 1880s. Barnum & Bailey Circus shows, as it was named at that time, turned out to be successful as people liked the idea.
Below is a list of the cities and venues which will host the Barnum & Bailey Circus through March:

Bill de Blasio May Ban Barnum & Bailey Circus from New York

from: frontpagemag.com
by Daniel Greenfield
February 15, 2014
At least the old lefties went in for bread and circuses. The new lefties like William Wilhelm Jr. aka Bill de Blasio are out to ban the circuses too. Maybe they hate the competition from professional trained clowns.

The engine behind the ban is the deeply controversial animal rights group NYCLASS that helped bankroll Bill de Blasio’s win. With so many top politicians in its pocket, it’s moving on from attacking horses to attacking elephants.

The circus is coming to town — and some advocates want it to be for the last time.

NYCLASS, the animal rights group that’s been the key player in pushing for a ban on Central Park horse carriages, says it also wants the city to bar the use of animals in circuses — one item on an expanded agenda it plans to pursue this year.

“Animals in the circus are horribly abused. Animals in nature don’t naturally wear tutus and stand on their hind legs,” said Allie Feldman, the group’s executive director.

Well you learn something new every day. But wait, here’s an elephant doing just that in nature.

Animal rights activists like Allie Feldman are ignorant swine when it comes to knowing anything about the animals they want to save kill for their own good. But that’s unnecessarily insulting to swine who don’t deserve being compared to Allie Feldman.

Feldman however is correct about tutus. Animals in nature don’t wear them. Animals in nature however also eat obnoxious animal rights activists so let’s call it even.

Abu Dhabi: A new daily event has become a big draw for children and families to the Six Continents fair at Khalifa Park in Abu Dhabi, organised by Abu Dhabi Municipality.
Latino Circo (Latin Circus), which brought about 30 artists to the capital, has several stunning acts like high-wire acrobatics, trapeze and a tiger show with four big cats.
Dance, music and clowns add colour to the circus.
Tight-rope walkers and motorcycle stunts keep the viewers on edge as they perform without a safety net. Even acrobats on the trapeze leave the audience nervous with their stunts.
A temporary cage was assembled for the gigantic tigers for their stunts with a single trainer. Whenever they started roaring loudly at their trainer, he tried to pacify them by offering them a piece of meat
When a small ‘box of surprise’ was opened, an ‘elastic’ man emerged and started performing acrobatics. He went back into the box ‘elastically’ amidst applause from the spectators.
The circus is part of the municipality’s initiative to offer entertainment to all sections of society, especially families, at the Six Continent fair, a senior official told Gulf News
