ROCHESTER, NY – East meets West when Cirque du Soleil brings Dralion to Blue Cross Arena at the Community War Memorial this spring.
Shows are scheduled May 23 to 27.
Dralion, which has played to more than 8 million people since its 1999 debut, fuses 3,000 year old Chinese circus traditions with the avant-garde, multidisciplinary style of Cirque du Soleil.
The name Dralion (pronounced Drah-lee-on) is drawn from its two main symbols: the dragon, representing the East, and the lion, representing the West. Dralion derives much of its inspiration from Eastern philosophy with its perpetual quest for harmony between humans and nature.
In Dralion, the four elements that govern the natural order take on a human form. Thus embodied, each element is represented by its own evocative color: air is blue; water is green; fire is red; earth is ochre. In the world of Dralion, cultures blend, Man and Nature are one, and balance is achieved.
Audiences will also hear cultures merging in the music. Six musicians and two singers will feature a variety of Indian-inspired songs and motifs from Africa and central and western Europe.
Dralion is the 12th touring production from Cirque du Soleil. The cast of 52 includes acrobats, gymnasts, musicians, singers and comedic characters. The stage features a 26-foot-high metallic wall that is scaled by performers.
Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 23 to 26, 3:30 p.m. May 26 and 1 and 5 p.m. May 27.
