The Moscow State Circus - Review by AboutMyArea

If you've ever thought about running away to the circus, you have to be pretty spectacular to join this one as these artists never put a foot wrong in yesterday's amazing show in Southsea.

Set up on Southsea Common, The Moscow State Circus will be there until the 2nd September with "Babushkin Sekret". Based on the Legend of the Twelve Chairs, it depicts the story of  Valerik who, following the Russian Revolution, searches for the family's lost fortune which is hidden in one of twelve chairs.
Joined by his sidekick Valik, the two clowns guide us through the story and are actually laugh out loud hilarious which surprised me as I have never thought clowns were that funny. But they were, especially when they pulled out members of the audience who seemed to have no choice but to join in with the silliness.
What follows is a spectacular and jaw-dropping show which had people gasping in their seats. Yes, we've all seen tightrope acts but have you seen two men balancing a woman on their head doing the splits between them? Breathtaking.
Each act was stunning: jugglers up high on a reverse pyramid who just seemed so relaxed that you expected them to falter any second, skippers who did things with ropes that I didn't know was possible and an awe-inspiring show of strength and balance with chairs. Add to that the most dizzying series of acrobats I have ever seen, the show ended with a roar of applause, whoops and whistles.
My heart was in my mouth for much the of the show. We were seated right at the front and there were times when the performers seemed a little too close for comfort should there be a disaster. Some of them were not wearing a safety harness which just goes to show the confidence they have and how hard they must work. When you think about the amount of work that goes into the performance, you realise what a tight knit community they must be, not just the artists but all the support staff too who ensured that everything was in place throughout the show.
