Circus puts things away when it isn't on the road

IN A self-storage space in Toa Payoh, there is a room filled with things associated with a circus.
Unicycles, plastic saucers of various colours, spinning reels (called diabolos) and balance boards (called rola-bolas) are among the many bulky props that belong to Circus Outreach.
The non-profit youth organisation conducts school workshops for "at-risk" young people who need guidance in life.

The group also performs at street and clown festivals in Singapore and overseas.
The items in self-storage once cluttered up the group's studio and office in Tanjong Pagar. They were moved to StorHub Self Storage in 2006.

The circus town's been born.

Tucson became host to the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus as a pack of pachyderms paraded past the peering (and partially perturbed) populace.
As for the perturbed, animal-rights advocates already are posting anti-circus messages on StarNet. The elephant walk preceded the circus shows, running Wednesday through Sunday at the Tucson Convention Center.

I was pleasantly surprised tonight when I found out my cousin

had posted a picture, on facebook, of brother Bill from the Ocean City Covention Hall

back about 1972

In the picture with Bill were Mrs Massey, whose son Lionel, managed the concessions

at the Convention Hall, and Earl Baird, manager of the Convention Hall.

We had our cotton candy and popcorn concession booked there for a month.

It was either Sam Snyder's Water Follies or an in house promoted ice show.

I'm not sure which as we played both in consecative years.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- One of the oldest museums in Bridgeport suffered extensive damage during the tornado that touched down on Thursday afternoon.

Officials at the Barnum Museum said damage could be in the millions of dollars and a special collection that was being prepared to open was damaged.

Beyond concerns that the 19th century museum sustained structural damage, two of its windows also blew out during the tornado on Thursday. The windows are part of the air circulation inside the museum. Officials said after the windows blew out, all the debris outside on the street made its way into the museum and onto artifacts that are irreplaceable.
“Just the amount of glass in the street is unbelievable,” said Executive Director of the Barnum Museum, Kathy Mahr. “It was so dangerous to the point where I had to soak my arms in Epsom salt because I thought I had fiber glass.”
It literary took blood, sweat and tears from Maher and her 5-person staff to attempt to salvage many of the relics. Part of the exhibit that was set to open on July 5, in honor of P.T.Barnum’s 200th birthday.
Barnum’s legacy, of course, is “The Greatest Show On Earth.”
Maher said Barnum’s show must go on in 11 days, despite the fact some items will be missing.
Nothing was completely destroyed during the tornado, but Maher said she will not know the true extent of the damage until professionals come in, carefully peel back protective covers and open frames and cases to get a better understanding of the damage.

Circus is in town this weekend
Carden Circus of Las Vegas, Nev., will bring two hours of family fun at 3 and 7 p.m. today and 1 and 5 p.m. Sunday at Muskogee Fairgrounds.

There will be three rings with an African lion and Siberian tigers presented by the world renown wild animal trainer Adam Burke. There will be aerialists, acrobats, clowns and talented elephants.

Elephant rides will be available and a giant moon bounce.

Special rates are $25 for two adults and three children.

HER LIFE'S UP IN THE AIR

Life, for Serenity Smith Forchion, is up in the air.
A circus acrobat, she dangles from trapezes, weaves herself up and down hanging fabric, and flies around the world to perform these acts.
Work, however, keeps her well-grounded. She performs, at times, with her twin sister, Elsie Smith, or her husband, Bill Forchion. Elsie and Serenity run the New England Center for Circus Arts in Brattleboro. Bill teaches there, too.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Serenity said one evening in their studio, set up on the third floor of an old cotton mill. “We have crazy hours in order to make a living doing this. You have to work all the time.
“I have three businesses. I teach. I perform. We also build circus equipment. Add to that, we have a family, and my husband makes movies. If we didn’t work together, we’d probably never see each other.”
As the 39-year-old Brattleboro woman speaks, her youngest of three children, a 7-month-old girl, crawls on the office floor. Earlier that day, Serenity taught a class with the baby on her back, large curious eyes enraptured with contorted bodies practicing upon various contraptions.
Serenity was first drawn to the circus arts by the trapeze on a trip to the Caribbean.
