Global Activism: CircEsteem uses circus arts to build child self-esteem

It's Thursday! That means it's time for our Global Activism segment. Each Thursday, we talk with a person who decided to make the world a better place.
Today, we catch up with one of our Global Activists, Maribeth Joy, executive director of CircEsteem. For over a decade, CircEsteem’s stated mission has been to unite youth from diverse racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds, helping them build self-esteem and mutual respect through learning circus arts.
Maribeth says CircEsteem uses circus as a tool for social change. She reflects upon her work in this statement:

CircEsteem at Sinfonieta
"In the nine years I have worked at CircEsteem, I have seen tremendous life transformations take place in many Chicago area youth.  I have had the privilege to work with and mentor low income at risk youth, many of whom were recent arrived refugees.  They came to CircEsteem with limited English language ability. Through our free afterschool tutoring program HomeWork & CircusWork, they received needed support to thrive in school and in their communities.  Circus teaches trust and team work. Together we have a created a community where everyone is welcomed and everyone has a place in the center ring!

CircEsteem uses circus as a tool for social change.  We provide academic assistance, employment opportunities, college scholarships and cross cultural experiences through international travel and partnerships.  We break down stereotypes of race, class, and gender while teaching kids how to juggle, unicycle, do partner acrobatics, and clown just around.  Most importantly, we help kids feel good about themselves by building self-esteem through the practice and performance of circus arts.
Our annual Winter Circus (December 15th & 16th, 2012) is proof that our mission works.  Over 120 kids from all over Chicago and as far away as Ethiopia, Tanzania, Burma and Togo will perform the circus skills they have learned while connecting with others quite different than themselves.  When the kids are on stage, it doesn’t matter where they are from or what type of car their parents drive - it’s about working together and creating something truly special - a circus of their own."
CircEsteem's Winter Circus takes place 12/15 & 12/16 at Alternatives, 4730 N. Sheridan Rd. in Chicago.

Elephants saved from Siberian cold with vodka, Russian circus trainers claim

A Russian circus elephant is seen inside its trailer outside the city of Novosibirsk, before the trailer was destroyed by a fire, in a photo provided by newsru.com.

MOSCOW Circus trainers claim two of their elephants were saved from the deadly Siberian cold by vodka.

Emergency ministry spokesman Alexander Davydov said Friday that the elephants were in a trailer that caught fire Thursday outside the city of Novosibirsk, forcing trainers to take them out into the bitter cold before another truck arrived to deliver them to a warm gym at a local community college.

The Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reported that trainer Leonid Labo had the animals, aged 45 and 48, drink 2.6 gallons of vodka diluted in warm water — and a veterinarian said later that only the tips of their ears were frostbitten.

Although scientists say alcohol can make humans feel warmer but actually lowers their core body temperature, Novosibisk zoo director Rostislav Shilo told the daily that the vodka saved the animals from frostbite and pneumonia, without harming or even intoxicating them.

Circus Flora goes indoors for a holiday show

Circus Flora and the St. Louis Symphony first collaborated in 2011 for "The Floating Palace." The groups team up again for "A Child's Christmas in Wales" at Powell Symphony Hall. Handout photo

With its child-friendly blend of humor, thrills and spectacle, Circus Flora was made for the holidays. So it’s not surprising that the St. Louis institution known for pitching its tent near Powell Hall is once again taking its magic indoors — to the accompaniment of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
“A Child’s Christmas in Wales” promises to generate the kind of warm glow that Powell Hall — a space mainly associated with the classical music canon — can accommodate as comfortably as the acrobats, aerialists and other circus performers. A glow in keeping with the spirit of the season.
“Hopefully, it’ll be as warm as ‘The Nutcracker,’” says Ivor David Balding, artistic director and producer of Circus Flora.

Popovich combines human and animal comedy on stage

The Popovich Comedy Pet Theater is Sunday.

from:  idahostatesman.com

Let’s start with the obvious question: How do you get a house cat to do anything, much less push a grocery cart, jump through hoops or roll on a ball?
Just ask Gregory Popovich, a world-class juggler, acrobat and animal whisperer who has mastered the art of coaxing house cats onto the stage.
“You see, each cat has a trick hiding inside them,” he says. “Cats are very independent, so I can’t make them do anything. What I have to find out is their natural talent and then build on that.”
Popovich has appeared with his Comedy Pet Theater on TV shows such as “Late Night with David Letterman,” “Penn & Teller” and “America’s Got Talent.”
Today, you’ll find Popovich and his animals at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas six days a week, except when he’s on tour with his award- winning show.
He brings it to Boise Dec. 16 as part of the Velma Morrison Family Theater Series. On stage, you’ll see hysterical feats performed by 14 cats, 12 dogs, three geese, one parrot and even a few humans.
All the animals are rescues from shelters. He says his show proves that all animals at shelters are worth the effort to save.
“So if you want a pet, maybe you will try there first,” Popovich says.
Just by going to the show you can help the Idaho Humane Society fill its Pet Food Pantry. Bring a can or small bag of pet food or treats with you.
Popovich learned to love and work with animals growing up in the Moscow Circus where his parents had a dog act.

SARASOTA - Many in Sarasota County's tight-knit circus community came together Thursday night to remember one of their own.
55-year-old Scott Parker was killed last week when a drunk driver slammed into his car on U.S. 301 in Sarasota. On Thursday, dozens attended a tribute for Parker at the Showfolks of Sarasota building on Lockwood Ridge Road.

"Scott was loved by so many people. He made so many people laugh and smile. He was one of a kind," said Parker's girlfriend, Tamala Moore.
In 1975, Parker graduated from the Ringling Clown College in Venice. He then went on to perform in the Ringling Bros. Circus and Circus Vargas for two decades.

"I think this is his legacy," said Parker's sister, Darcy Wharton. "He was just a wonderful human being."
"He was an excellent performer," said Susan Bennett, a former trapeze artist who was in the circus with Parker. "At the drop of a hat, he could make you laugh."
A private visitation was also held for Parker on Thursday. A memorial service will take place in his home state of California in the near future. He leaves behind a 21-year-old daughter.
