Cowboy Dan threw a round of oversized show knives into a fast-spinning panel, sticking each one against centrifugal force.
Then he took it up a notch for a crowd at the Clark County Fair on Sunday.
Cowgirl and assistant Melody Joy Emel stepped into the center of the circular panel and held tight as he pushed it into a spin, throwing knives around her with consecutive smacks.
With silver protruding from the red, white and blue panel, Emel continued to spin.
Cowboy Dan tossed a green balloon into the air, and bang! Emel shot it with a tiny pistol in her waistband.
"When we perform I'm managing the show and the crowd," said Dan Mink, who started the Rhinestone Ropers show 15 years ago. "But when we do that trick, I'm thinking about the knives 100 percent."

Circus tricks with a cowboy twist abound at the Clark County Fair, running through Aug. 12. The fair, in its 144th year, will attract hundreds of thousands of patrons to its carnival rides, vendors and exhibits over the 10-day run, organizers said.
This year's theme is "Summer's Best Goes West," with an Old West flavor in the featured entertainment -- three roping acts on the Lone Star Stage: Cowboy Dan's Rhinestone Ropers, Karen Quest Cowgirl Tricks and Leapin' Louie Comedy Shows.
Three such acts is unusual for a fair, said Karen Quest, longtime clown, juggler and trick roper. Typically fairs hire one act to fill the niche. "But that's like not booking more than one band because they all have drums and a guitar," she said.
Matt Ferris, marketing manager for the fair, said the plethora of Old West entertainment and attractions bolsters the theme, a popular one recycled from previous years and fitting for Clark County's uniquely agricultural fair.
"A lot of fairs have turned urban," Ferris said. "The closest agricultural fair is probably Clackamas County. For Washington, it's pretty much us."

Fairs, Like Crops, Are Drooping With the Heat

The task of hot-weather pig maintenance.
Some show pigs were skinnier than normal, and some farm children in 4-H brought fewer cows than planned, after families had to shrink their herds under the weight of scalding heat, a dearth of feed and no end in sight.
Across the nation’s middle, it is fair season — the time of year when rural life is on proud display, generations of farm families gather and deep-fried foods are guiltless.

CEDARBURG, Wis. — The cheese curds were sizzling in vats of oil, the cartoon-colored carnival rides were spinning, and the tractors, ready to pull something heavy, were revving. Yet all was not right last week at the Ozaukee County Fair, age 153.
Inside the barns here, the entries competing for top vegetable and flower were fewer than usual. The rabbits vying for prizes were scarcer, too, said Elaine Diedrich, supervisor of the rabbit tent, as she paced the aisles, ready to submerge overheated animals up to their noses in cold water.
But at county and state fairs across corn country this year, the most widespread drought since the 1950s is also evident. While the fairs are soldiering on, dousing themselves in Lemon Shake-Ups and Midwestern resolve, the hot, dry, endless summer has seeped into even the cheeriest, oldest tradition.

The Cole Bros. Circus is returning to three South Jersey locations:

Mays Landing, Atlantic City Race Course - Black Horse Pike, Wed. through Fri., Aug. 8-10, 2012; show times are 4:30 & 7:30 p.m. daily.

Ronald McDonald will be the honorary ringmaster and ride one of our circus elephants in the show on Wed., Aug. 8, 2012 at the 7:30 p.m. performance.

Trinity Learning Center students, of Egg Harbor Township, will sing the national anthem at the Wed., Aug. 8, 2012 at the 7:30 p.m. performance.

Cole Bros. Circus is raffling off four front row VIP seats to the winner's choice of performance, either in Seaville or Rio Grande. As two elephants walked to the parking lot of the Jones Road soccer fields, one grabbed hold of the other's tail.
Chang and Lulu, elephants from the Cole Brothers circus, basked as members of the Forked River Fire Company hosed them down on Saturday morning, opening their mouths wide to get a drink.
“It was awesome,” said James Ivins of the Forked River Fire Company. “I’ve never been that close to an elephant before. I’m a 45-year-old kid.”
Chang laid down as if he were taking a break from the active lifestyle of show business. He would later be performing for Jersey Shore residents.

This is the second year the Forked River Fire Company partnered with Cole Brothers for a fundraiser.
President Jim Granato had found a letter from the circus company two years ago and thought the partnership could really benefit the fire company.
The fire company sells tickets at the department two weeks prior to the show, receiving a portion of the proceeds. Last year, the company earned approximately $7,000.
“It’s a win-win,” Granato said. “It helps us. Everyone who went last year enjoyed it.”
Prior to heading back to the Cole Brothers’ tent to prepare for the big day, Chang and Lulu were fed dozens of apples.
The tips of their trunks grabbed the apples like a vacuum. They then curled their trunks to toss the apple in their mouths and swallowed the fruit whole, one after another. Chang and Lulu’s trunks went from person to person looking for more.

 

The Cole Brothers “Circus of the Stars” is from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
The show features the elephants, tigers, French poodles, springboard gymnasts, a Russian Barre routine, a magician, the human cannonball, clowns and more.

GIRARD, PA -- Temperatures Saturday were well into the 80s at 8:30 a.m. when the Dan Rice Days Festival 5K run began on Mechanic Street.
Dave Wehr, 65, of Girard, opted to speed-walk it, finishing in 37 minutes, 25 seconds.
By midafternoon, with temperatures in the low 90s and humidity high, Wehr rested on a bench in Wells Park along West Main Street, trying to stay hydrated as he listened to the Gem City Jazz Ensemble perform on the main stage.
"This is almost a homecoming for the whole town,'' Wehr said of the three-day festival, which began Thursday and ended Saturday.
It honors Dan Rice, a circus showman who married a Girard woman and lived in the community in the 1850s.
"A lot of people who don't live here anymore come home for this,'' Wehr said. "It's a good, small-town celebration.''

Charli K loves seeing the wonder and awe in the faces of audience members during her performance as Little Buddha in Cirque du Soleil’s “Dralion.”
“I have a lot of time to view their reactions as I am working,” she said in a telephone interview from the road. “I believe our job is to engulf people into our world. I try to do that as much as possible — to bring people in so they feel part of the show.”
The show, which plays the Richmond Coliseum Aug. 8 to 12, fuses ancient Chinese circus traditions with the innovative style of Cirque du Soleil. The name “Dralion” is drawn from its two main symbols: the dragon, representing the East, and the lion, representing the West.
