Circus wins major lawsuit

As regular readers know, we think children can learn a lot by visiting a zoo or circus. This does not mean every circus and every zoo is well run. But the ones done right offer youngsters a chance not afforded by the Animal Planet and the like, even on a hi-def flat-screen TV.

Our endorsements always run into objections by animal rights activists who point to examples of inhumane treatment. The most often referenced in recent years has involved former circus “barn man” Tom Rider and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

It seems every time we have urged parents to take their children to a circus, including those other than Ringling, the abuse supposedly witnessed by Rider is quoted in great detail.

As it turns out, Rider was lying through his teeth. Last week the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals agreed to pay the owners of Ringling, Feld Entertainment Inc., $9.3 million after earlier losing a lawsuit claiming the circus abused its circus elephants.

The suit had been brought by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, but hinged on Rider’s testimony.

Rider cared for elephants in one of the circus’s traveling shows from 1997 to 1999. U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan said Rider lied about payments he received from various animal-rights groups beginning in 2000 and that he exaggerated his personal attachment to the animals.

Anyone who says winter is dull hasn't lived in St. Louis. Here is a sampling.
JANUARY & FEBRUARY
'CELEBRATE THEATER'
Arts performers and educators spread the celebration to St. Louis County Library branches as part of the year's Art@Your Library. Times, dates, locations: http://www.slcl.org/art@yourlibrary/january-february. Registration required for some events.
Monkey Tales Theatre presents a new twist on the classic fairy tale, "The Frog Prince," for ages 3 and up and Paul Mesner Puppets present the “Comical Adventures of Old Mother Hubbarb” for preschoolers and older. The play includes audience participation, silly antics and important environmental lessons as the maiden tries to rescue the prince from the evil troll princess. Kids ages 4 to 6 activate their suits with “Creature Power” to enter the animal kingdom through creative drama and movement led by a COCA teaching artist. The same age group can “Run Away with the Circus” -- and DaySpring School of the Arts – while ages 7 to 11 are entertained while creating puppets. Stages St. Louis brings a “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” acting workshop to life for ages 8 to 11. Ages 10 to 15 learn how to write and perform a blues song with the Freedom Arts and Educaton Center. No dance experience is necessary for ages 9 to 14 trying out moves and choreography inspired by pop icon Michael Jackson with a COCA teaching artist.

'CAPRICCIO': CIRCUS HARMONY
The annual show features 30 flying children and the Circus Harmony Band in a vaudevillian adventure. For the first time, the presentation features singing along with unicycling, juggling, wire walking and other feats of skill and daring performed by talented voices and bodies of metro St. Louisans. Matinees begin at 2 p.m. each day, plus Saturday evening performances at 7 p.m. Tickets at $20 per adult, $15 per child and senior includes admission to City Museum, 701 N. 15th St., St. Louis, show site and home of Circus Harmony. UniverSoul Circus 20th Anniversary Theme Song Contest Extended!

The UniverSoul Circus was founded many years ago to show off the various talents of black performers beyond singing and dancing, in a circus atmosphere. This show is one of the only ones that you can hear and see circus performances set to Pop, Classic R&B, Latin, Hip Hop, Jazz, and Gospel genres with African American performers.

For it’s 20th Anniversary, the UniverSoul Circus is hosting a theme song contest that will run until January 13.  The contest is open to musicians from any musical genre who can create the strongest song (2-3:30 mins) that stylistically fits the positive tone of the show.

The winner of the UniverSoul Circus 20th Anniversary Theme Song Contest will have their song featured at every circus performance, have their song on UniverSoul commercials, and at the brand’s website.  To enter, contestants will need to provide instrumental or vocal and instrumental tracks if there are lyrics and submit them to themesong@universoulcircus.com.  Entries will be accepted until 5 pm EST, January 13th, 2013.  Good luck!

A bit more than a week ago, clowns invaded Storybook Circus at the Magic Kingdom. My wife hates clowns with a passion. I’ve always been cautiously indifferent about them. There’s something creepy about them on a conceptual level, but in practice they fall somewhere in the triangular zone between boring, droll, and pointless, moving variously throughout that metaphorical region.

Wowie, Wowzer!
The Magic Kingdom clown acts (there are two) manage to strike different reactions in me. The one-man show Wowzer, essentially a juggling act, managed to be mildly entertaining. This clown impressed with his skills rather than relied on “humor” (or the clown variant thereof) to try to distract. The Giggle Gang, though, was deplorable. My wife ran away shortly after the act started (coulrophobia had kicked in for THESE clowns). They did rely on the standard brand of clown humor, which is to say a certain kind of tongue in cheek attitude, with fake scenarios embraced as though real, and interactions are forced despite the brazen unnatural reality of it, all to achieve a punchline through pun or wit. They prowled the audience not once but twice to lasso an unwitting victim to come center stage and become part of the “fun”, which is probably what sent my wife packing. Not a great show to watch as an introvert; you’ll experience panic.

She will soon pretend that a male member of the audience is infatuated with her.

 

I don’t blame the actors. Even the script isn’t really the problem. I just don’t like the concept.
Not everyone hates the Giggle Gang. I have friends who found it funny and fun, and even appropriate for the Magic Kingdom. On the last point I don’t think I can be entirely convinced. The clowns, in fact, made me re-think my heretofore positive reaction to having a circus inside the Magic Kingdom. Previously I was OK with it since the art direction was so high, and the place did not exude your typical carny vibe of a circus. It was more like a classy period piece of the 1930s that happened to include elements of a circus. But with the inclusion of clowns, the area is being downgraded just to a regular circus again, and that’s a shame.
