This past weekend the Zoppé Family Circus returned to Tucson for its second year. The circus was hosted by UApresents at Reid Park. There were nine performances and students could get into the event for only $15 with a CatCard, said Darsen Campbell, the marketing and publicity manager for UApresents. Campbell said UApresents invited the circus back to add culture to Tucson.
The Zoppé family has been performing this circus the same way for 170 years. His ancestors started these performances in 1842 in Venice, Italy. Zoppé’s father, Alberto Zoppé, brought the circus to the United States when he was asked to be in a show by John Ringling North. Giovanni Zoppé has since carried on the tradition performing with his mother, two sisters and their husbands.
“We’re not like other circuses where it’s one act after the other. We tell a story during our show ­— the story of our family, seven generations,” Zoppé told UApresents.
This one-ring circus, despite being small, came fully equipped with trapeze artists, a tightrope walker, horses, two clowns, and even some performances using fire.
Besides being the owner and producer, Zoppé is also one of the clowns, Nino. Zoppé said that Nino is his alter ego.
“Or Giovanni is his alter ego, that’s a better way to put it,” Zoppé said.
Campbell said the tent only holds about 500 people but on Saturday, the show was sold out.
Spectator Lisa Sieglaff said she used to go to the big circuses like Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey, and that she really enjoyed taking her kids.
Attendee Ross Reisinger, who had come with his wife and two children, said they went to the Zoppé Family Circus last year as well. He said overall, it’s a well put-together show.
“Everything this circus did is the way a circus is supposed to be,” Zoppé said.

The nonprofit Ring of Fame foundation annually recognizes a few circus notables who have made significant contributions to the circus. Since its 1988 founding, 112 individuals and group acts have been inducted. The following acts were inducted Sunday during a ceremony on St. Armands Circle:
PABLO RODRIGUEZ AND FAMILY
Pablo Rodriguez and his family were best known for a five-bar aerial act which was developed in the U.S. and Mexico and introduced to Europeans in 1962 in Sweden's Circus Scott. On returning to the United States, Rodriquez developed a triple-wide flying trapeze act.
TIM HOLST
The late Tim Holst searched for fresh talent around the world as vice president of talent and production for Ringling Bros. Holst was a 37-year Ringling veteran who began his career as a clown.
CHARLES AND MATHIAS CORONAS
Highwire walkers Charles and Mathias Coronas were born in Czechoslovakia, but came to America in 1952. They performed for virtually every major American circus, eventually producing their own circuses and thrill shows. Mathias died in 2006. Charles attended the ceremony Sunday.

ORLANDO -- Jason Gibson was in the Army. He also went to Full Sail University in Winter Park. So when he attends his high school reunions and tells his former classmates that he has been traveling with the circus for 16 years, you can imagine their shock.
 And he wouldn't have it any other way.
 "It's awesome!" Gibson beamed, who's the Ringling Bros. "Built To Amaze" assistant general manager.
 Tuesday, he took me inside the Amway Center while crews were constructing the stage.
 "We have about 40-50 crew members that help set up the show," Gibson said, looking up at the cable extensions attached to the ceiling. "We also have our high-wire act. They actually set up their own riggings, so it's kind of like a skydiver packing his own parachute because, I mean, it's an extremely dangerous job. They want to do their rigging to make sure everything's ready to go."
 The crew needs to set up the stage 45 times because the circus train is stopping in 45 cities. The biggest challenge, he says, is space.
 "Usually we have the buildings that [have a] 200 x 85 foot floor. If we have that, we're good to go on the floor. We can fit everything on the floor for the show. This place -- this is amazing. Amway Center is awesome! This is so great to be here."

Centenary Stage presents Michael DuBois in The Solo Circus

The Centenary Stage Company continues their Family Fun Series on Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. in the Sitnik Theater of the David and Carol Lackland Center with a one-man circus routine fun for family members of all ages. Michael DuBois' show, The Solo Circus, is a fast-paced, audience interactive variety show featuring an all-original presentation of magic, juggling, mentalism, circus, and sideshow stunts all wrapped in a blanket of comedy.
"I fell in love with the circus when I was four at Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey," said DuBois.
He has been performing for over eight years with national appearances on The Tonight Show and The Jay Leno Show, featured in several magazines, performed at over 500 colleges and universities across the U.S., as well as headlines multiple major cruise lines all over the world. The Family Fun Series – sponsored by Fulton Bank – will also feature The Catskill Puppet Theatre’s performance, “The Lion’s Whiskers” on April 13.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – As “The Great Bretsky” levitated a girl onstage in the Imperial Ballroom, Jerry Spencer and Clancy Aerts were not trying to figure out how the popular magician pulled off his trick as they watched from the back of the room at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel.
Clancy and Aerts were trying to decide which acts to book for the Oceana County Fair Days they will stage eight months from now in Hart.

“We’re thinking about signing something for Children’s Day,” said Spencer as they watched the “Kids Friendly Showcase.”
Spencer, who has been involved with the Oceana County Fair for nearly 50 years, said getting family-friendly entertainment will be a key to their success at this summer’s event. Their 141-year-old event is one of the longest continuously running county fairs in Michigan, Spencer said.
Spencer and Aerts were among 1,400 fair organizers, vendors and entertainers who attended the Michigan Association of Fairs and Expositions annual convention at the hotel this week. The three-day convention ends Saturday, Jan. 12.

Attendees like Spencer and Aerts were treated to hospitality suites, dinners and exhibition tables that offered to bring their events everything from motorcycle thrill shows, tractors pulls and clowns to portable toilets, grandstands and insurance coverage.
The “Kids Friendly Showcase” is a relatively new feature for the convention, which has been held for 128 years, said Larry Bush, general chairman of the Swartz Creek Hometown Days and organizer of the showcase.
