Jury decides for circus in suit by 2 activists

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Jurors needed less than two hours to decide in favor of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in a suit filed by two animal rights activists who had claimed they were harassed for trying to videotape the backstage treatment of animals, an attorney for the circus said.
In a suit filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose in 2011, Deniz Bolbol and Joseph Patrick Cuviello had claimed they were harassed when Ringling employees pointed lasers at their video cameras and used ropes and water blasts to interfere with their taping of the animals at San Jose's HP Pavilion in August 2010, the San Jose Mercury News (bit.ly/UvhaVu) reported.
But Ringling's attorney, Ruby Kazi, told the newspaper when jurors went out at 2:47 p.m. Thursday they returned at 4:05 p.m., deciding unanimously in favor of the circus.
Jurors had determined the two plaintiffs were "just trying to drum up a lawsuit," Kazi said.
But Bolbol and Cuviello, who say they've been gathering evidence of the alleged mistreatment of elephants for 10 years through their group Humanity Through Education, said they will continue to press for animal rights.
"This is just the latest in a long series of cases that Pat and I have been forced to bring because of Ringling's attempts to stop us from documenting the abuse of their animals," Bolbol said Saturday.

In documenting the rough corners of 1970s New York, Jill Freedman brought out with her photography something old-school lurid; like the flashbulb exposures of Weegee and Brassaï in the decades before, she always offered a startlingly and very human view on her street subjects. When in 1971 the photographer, then in her early 30s, borrowed a white Volkswagen bus to join the circus for two months, she turned her 35-mm camera on the claustrophobia of the caged animals and strange lives of the clowns and performers.

Ringmaster Billy Martin says there are lots of new additions to see at this year's performance of the Royal Hanneford Circus on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the Westchester County Center in White Plains.
Shows run Feb. 16, 17, and 18 at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
The Ringmaster says that in addition to three rings of animals and acrobats, vistors will get to meet Grandma the Clown. See tigers, motorcycles perform death-defying tricks, and the Hanneford Elephants.

Ringmaster Billy Martin says the circus takes pride in its three elephants, and in the care that the circus staff gives the animals. He calls it a "25-hour" a day job making sure the elephants are well cared for.
The 38th annual showing of the circus at the County Center began on Saturday, and continues Sunday and Monday. Shows run Feb. 16, 17, and 18 at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

That may be how ringmaster Corriveau pitches his latest restaurant/entertainment concept to investors. Called the BozoWorld of Entertainment, Corriveau and his partners have dreamed up an innovative 25,000-square-foot restaurant / entertainment complex, the first of which he plans to open on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, 2013 in Dallas.
The new themed restaurant will operate under the name Bozo’s Big Top in an octagon-shaped building with the appearance of big top tent. With descriptive slogans that includes ‘Funnest Place on Earth!’ Corriveau hopes to follow a successful opening with an aggressive expansion planto open multi-unit, full service restaurants in major U.S. markets and internationally.
“I’m more than excited about the opportunity to spearhead the creation of what I consider ‘something special’ as well as applying the wide spectrum of knowledge harvested during my 30-years of experience within the restaurant / entertainment industry,” said Corriveau, then adding, “not to mention how much fun and what a helluva ride we’ll have doing it!”
BozoWorld LLC, which owns the exclusive global identity rights to the “Bozo the Clown” brand for restaurant / entertainment concepts, was recently formed by two successful ed-tech entrepreneurs. Armie Carabet, chairman and CEO of online education firm ClickN Kids Inc., and James Highfill, COO of ClickN Kids, brought on Corriveau as co-founder and CEO of BozoWorld to help launch and develop the Big Top concept of food, entertainment and attractions.
Carabet and Highfill cited Corriveau's ‘can-do attitude’ as well as his industry expertise and demonstrated management talent for bringing him into the venture.

DECATUR, Ala. (WAAY) - The Piccadilly Circus is coming to town!
Piccadilly is returning to Celebration Arena with an all new show that they call Piccadilly Circus BLAMMO!

PHILADELPHIA — “The Greatest Show on Earth” returns to Philadelphia and the Wells Fargo Center and all the important elements are there – acrobats, clowns, tigers, unicycles, trapeze and of course a ringmaster in a top hat.
To properly review this latest edition of Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus I brought along two keen circus critics – my 7-year-old daughter Shannon and her friend Cadence Fetizanan, 8 – who both repeatedly watched the animated movie “Madagascar 3,” which focuses on a circus, making them experts in the art form and setting expectations high.
And as far as the young critics went, their expectations were met.
Perhaps one of the best moments came before the actual circus began. If you get there early, kids can go down on the floor of the Wells Fargo Center and see a couple of the performers and performances up close – or go jump in a bounce house or try on actual circus costumes.
Shannon was all about the cool circus bounce house until she caught sight of a couple of acts and was transfixed, along with Cadence. Aerialists dangled over their heads, they saw the slapstick of the clowns up close and the elephants were so close that both girls held their noses and declared, “Stinky!” even as they were awestruck by massive animals.
And then they were invited out by one group of performers – “in front of everyone!” Cadence reported excitedly – to jump rope.

Circus railroad car exhibit may roll to Venice

VENICE - Although Venice may lose one landmark associated with its days as the winter headquarters of the Ringling Brothers and Barney & Bailey Circus, it stands to gain another.
The Venice Area Historical Society is in negotiations with Feld Entertainment, Palmetto-based owners of the circus, to acquire and restore one of the Pullman railcars used as sleeping quarters for its traveling performers.
If the deal goes through, the society will place the railcar on tracks at the historic train depot at 303 E. Venice Ave. that Sarasota County Area Transit uses as a bus station and refurbish it as an exhibit and visitor's center.
“We want to make this a tourist destination,” said society president Sue Chapman.
It comes as Venice is set to lose one of its legacies to the circus. Earlier this week, the city's chief building inspector told the City Council that, if it cannot be brought up to code within 60 days, the abandoned, deteriorated Circus Arena at the south end of Venice Island must be demolished. The arena is on land owned by the municipal airport.
