BIG APPLE

Big Apple Circus' past still charms audiences today
Performances scheduled in Bridgewater through March 17

BRIDGEWATER — Seth Bloom and Christina Gelson, clowns performing in The Big Apple Circus, wear partial masks rather than makeup. The high trapeze artist, Andrey Mantchev, has just one swing, rather than “fly” from one swing to another. And the circus’ slack-rope walker, Zhang Pan, wears a costume reminiscent of the Brooklyn Bridge, which opened in 1883, because it wasn’t until a parade of circus elephants crossed the bridge that many people began to trust it.
As the Big Apple Circus celebrates its 35th season this year, its current production, “Legendarium,” returns to the historic roots of the circus by employing many props and equipment that date back to the circus’ heyday in the late 19th and early 20th century.

This historic past, on display in performances in Bridgewater at the TD Bank Ballpark through March 17, still enchant, judging from the smiles on the faces of the children in the audience.

Ringmaster John Kennedy Kane, keeps the show rolling in the one-ring bigtop. As he introduces each act, he helps to put the historic traditions behind it into perspective. For example, he said the diameter of every circus ring was standardized in the 18th century to be the smallest circle in which a horse could gallop around the ring: 42 feet. Equestrian trainer Jenny Vidbel had her horses and ponies prancing, dancing and galloping in just such a 42 feet ring, which is still the standard for circuses today.

The Big Apple Circus prides itself on being great family entertainment. And looking around the audience at last Saturday’s performance, the acts had young children, parents and grandparents spellbound and laughing.
“I want to thank The Big Apple Circus for coming to Somerset County and bringing wholesome family entertainment,” said Somerville Mayor Brian Gallagher at the beginning of Saturday’s performance. Moms, Dads, kids, grandparents, this is what it’s all about.”
Peggy Gens came all the way from Bordentown with her young grandson, Austin, to see the circus because her cousin, Raritan Mayor Jo-Ann Liptak, was one of the honorary ringmasters, along with Gallagher and Bridgewater Mayor Dan Hayes. Gens said she was “pleasantly surprised” by the circus. She especially enjoyed the antics of the clowns, who had climbed through her row during their act. Austin didn’t like that so much, however. Austin said this was his second trip to a circus, and in spite of the clown who climbed over him, he was enjoying the circus very much.

Pants Down Circus
Big Top
The Garden of Unearthly Delights
Until 17th March
****1/2  stand out for family entertainment
High energy from the moment they enter the arena, Pants Down Circus do not stop entertaining the audience for their entire hour-long performance.

This troupe of highly skilled performers executes breath taking acrobatics, incredible feats of strength and mesmerizing acts of supreme balance, add some quirky humour that has both kids and parents laughing and it makes this a must see show for the whole family.

There are many highlights, but for my kids, when one of the foursome is caught short and needs to find a place to relieve herself quickly, it had them in stitches.
This show is a stand out for family entertainment at this year’s Fringe Festival.

MUSKEGON -- This circus is back in town.
The tigers roared, the motorcycles revved and the trapeze artists soared as students from all over the county stopped by the L.C. Walker Arena to catch the 27th Annual Shrine Circus on Friday morning.
The three-ring show has become an yearly tradition for many of the county’s children. Organizers invited schools and special needs students to take in their first show of their stop this year on Friday.

The three-ring show has become an yearly tradition for many of the county’s children. Organizers invited schools and special needs students to take in their first show of their stop this year on Friday.
Steele School in Muskegon was one of them.
Amado Perez’s third grade class, a two-way immersion program, squirmed in their seats and chatted with each other as they waited for the show’s second act.
“This experience for them is the first time for a lot of these kids, so they love it,” said Perez, speaking over the music blaring through the arena. “Coming to the circus is great.”
His student, JaKaia Mitchell, agreed.
“They have a lot of cool things, like juggling and clowns,” she said, as a performer came out with clubs lit on fire.

Perch Pole - International All Star Circus

An aerial dance performed by two members of the world-renowned circus family "The Wallendas". A pole is suspended vertically 40-feet in the air. One performer holds onto the pole with only her feet as she spins her partner like a helicopter blade while suspended by a loop that is attached to her head. Unbelievable balance and skill.

CIRCUS OF HORRORS

Circus act ready to shock audiences at Royal & Derngate

Circus of Horrors

Sunday 3 March 2013
A show by a company heralded as having brought circus kicking and screaming into the 21st century will be performed at Royal & Derngate on Monday.
The Circus of Horrors has come up with a new show, The Curse of the Devil Doll, which, as the story goes, takes its name from a series of unexplained and near-fatal incidents on the last tour (vehicles carrying the sinister puppet apparently exploded and crashed and sword swallower Hannibal Hellmurto ruptured his oesphagus with a lit neon tube as the doll came to life). Circus impresario Dr Haze reportedly faced a near mutiny as the cast refused to travel with the doll.
But, unperturbed by the weird occurrences, Haze has put the story of the doll at the centre of the new show, which takes audiences back to 1927 Berlin, the home of the Devil Doll.
Packed with new shocks, the line-up features sword swallowers, demon dwarfs, voodoo acrobats and knife throwers.
In the 18 years since its conception at Glastonbury Festival, the cult show has enjoyed worldwide success. The show will start at 7.30pm, with tickets priced from £24 to £11. Call 01604 624811 or visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The Circus Oz will be at the Elliot Hall of Music Sunday afternoon.
Performers call it a contemporary circus, and said they take on various roles.
Performers said acrobats may turn into jugglers, and then those jugglers may turn into musicians.
Performers said so far, audiences have not been disappointed.
"People are just amazed everyone does everything," said Circus Oz Director Ed Boyle. "People will do a pole act then start juggling or start playing an instrument. It's just a sense of fun."
"Everybody enjoys it, which is great," said performer Ghenoa Gela. "It's for a whole range of people, from teeny boppers, all the way up to mature, experienced adults."
The show originated in Melbourne, Australia.

MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- There's not many places where a man covered from head-to-toe in tattoos of puzzle pieces is a person to be admired. The third annual Lost Highway Tattoo and Music Expo, which will take over the Alcazar Shrine this weekend, is the exception.

The expo, which will continue through Sunday, allows attendees to meet with and browse the work of tattoo artists from across the southeast while enjoying live music and other entertainment.

In addition, the Lost Highway Tattoo and Music Expo has a full schedule of entertainment, including a battle of the bands, beauty contest and tattoo seminars on tap each day.
Among the event's performers are the puzzle piece man known as Enigma and his partner Serena Rose. The duo, which will take the stage at 5 p.m. today, entertains crowds by swallowing swords, breathing fire and performing other circus acts.
