Circus host welcomes audience to least political show on earth

"Children of all ages," even the politicos of the District, enjoy the circus because "it's the safest place in entertainment for your imagination," according to the ringmaster for the Greatest Show on Earth.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Ringmaster Johnathan Lee Iverson compares his job to "being the pope of sawdust," and takes his job setting the tone for "Dragons" just as seriously.

"It's really the last pure form of entertainment that there is. Everything is compromised," he told Yeas & Nays. "The worst we do is give your kid a lot of cotton candy. It's just one night -- they'll live."

Iverson, who planned to be an opera star before becoming ringmaster in 1999, sings his way through the show from the national anthem to the final notes of "Do you have the dragon in you?"

Courtesy photo Washington Redskins Quarterback Robert Griffin III tossed a football to an elephant on Sunday at the circus. He attended "DRAGONS" with his family.
To Iverson and other circus performers who travel like a "city without a ZIP code," Iverson said the only geographical difference is the weather. But when the circus train rolled into town last week, D.C. definitely noticed the elephants marching down the street.

We spotted Fox News host Bret Baier at opening night with son, Paul, and Robert Griffin III attended Sunday afternoon.

The circus ran through Sunday in D.C. and moves to Baltimore on Wednesday through April 7, and then to the Patriot Center in Fairfax April 10 to 21.

WILKES-BARRE — Members of the Uniformed Units of the Irem Shrine worked Saturday morning to prepare for the upcoming 64th annual circus. Many of the volunteers had hammers in hand, and all seemed to have smiles on their faces, knowing their efforts would benefit members of the community, young and old.
This year the circus, with performances starting April 1 by the Hanneford Circus, will include tigers, elephants, motorcycles and a refreshed grand finale.
Glen Kraft is delighted to be able to serve as a clown for the event. “I consider the circus a holiday,” Kraft said, “and everyone here is a kid, no matter what age.”
Shriner Hank Gordy, 93, who was seated in the middle of all the activity at the 109th Field Artillery Armory, has participated in the event throughout its history. “The circus has changed in some ways, and in some ways it has stayed exactly the same,” Gordy said. “But everyone every

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Welcome to the Squidling Brothers Sideshow Circus, featuring some of the most horrifying, most gruesome and of course, most dangerous stunts and acts.
The traveling shideshow of the Squidling Brothers, Matterz Squidling, "the Impenetrable Music Man," and Jelly Boy the Clown, "Living Cartoon and Natural Born Weirdo," hosted their friends Pain Solution, who traveled all the way from Olso, Norway, to perform with the Brothers at Lowe Mill Friday night.
The show also featured a few of Huntsville's very own artistic acts.

It's dark comedy show, a dare-devilish spin on the classic American Sideshows of the early 20th century, according to the Squidling Brothers website.
The group performed acts such as sword and fire eating, painful numbers involving "Big Victor" and "Little Victor"--two demented mousetraps--and a few more that are just too strange to describe.

The Kelly Miller Circus will be returning to the Parkland, MO April 25 and 26 at the St. Francois County Fairgrounds.
Performances will be held at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day.
Advanced tickets go on sale April 1 — $10 for adults and $6 for children under the age of 12. They will be available at Hastings Unlimited, Farmington; Mike’s Supermarket, Bismarck; First State Community Bank, at all locations in Farmington, Park Hills, Desloge and Bonne Terre; Belgrade State Bank, Desloge and Farmington; and Redfield Collision Center, Farmington.
Proceeds benefit the St. Francois County Rotary Club.
Beginning at 9 a.m. April 25 when the elephants pull the big top into the air, to the very moment when the king pole races to the ground at the end of the day, the public is invited to be a part of "Circus Day" as it has been experienced for more than 200 years. Free guided tours will be given to let everyone take part in watching the elephants as they play together unchained in their “elephant pen.” Circus personnel will be on hand to answer any questions about any of the animals on display.
Begun in 1938 by Obert Miller and his sons, Kelly and Dory, the Al G. Kelly Miller Brothers Circus — now known simply as Kelly Miller — has entertained millions of American and Canadian citizens while establishing itself in the fabric and history of the American Tented Circus.
From 1984 through 2006, David Rawls, president and third generation circus performer directed Kelly-Miller Circus. In 2007, another chapter in its history began when the reins were passed to John Ringling North II. North’s great uncles were the famous Ringling Brothers, his grandmother, their only sister.
Born into this most famous of circus families, North grew up on the “Greatest Show on Earth,” learning circus operation from his father Henry Ringling North and Uncle John Ringling North.
The Kelly Miller Circus travels on a fleet of 25 vehicles and requires an area of almost 90,000 square feet to set up. The circus big top, imported from Italy, has a seating capacity of 1,500 and is made of waterproof vinyl. The tent is 120-feet by 130-feet and stands 40-feet high. It is supported by more than a quarter-of-a-mile of heavy gauge aluminum tubing, as well as several miles of rope, steel cable and chain.
The show has gathered a number of stars from many nations and an exotic display of animals, enhanced with theatrical lighting and lively circus music.

NEW YORK (WLNY) – He’s been called “America’s Best Clown” but Bello Nock is no ordinary funny man — he’s a daredevil.

His motto is “No audience member should need more than the edge of his seat” — and believe us, he’s not joking.

The seventh-generation circus performer visited The Couch to tell us about his brand new show, Bello Mania.
Bello Nock’s career began when he joined Disney on Parade’s Peter Pan as “Little Michael Darling” at age six with Cathy Rigby.

Just three years later, he had his own wire-walking act and toured with his celebrated circus family.

More recently, Bello toured for eight seasons with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey®, becoming the only person in the company’s over 100-year history to have a production named after him.

Getting to Know Bello Nock

Bello Nock’s resume is unrivaled. A seventh generation performer, Bello’s career began when he joined Disney on Parade’s Peter Pan as “Little Michael Darling” at age six with Cathy Rigby. Just three years later, he had his own wire-walking act and toured with his family. More recently, Bello toured for eight seasons with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey®, becoming the only person in the company’s over 100-year history to have a production named after him. Bello has also performed with Mexico’s Circo Atayde and the Big Apple Circus. From his iconic hair to his endearing smile to his astonishing achievements, it is an honor to present the acclaimed Bello Nock at The New Victory Theater in his very first self-produced show.
