Circus acts are so much more multifarious now.
As well as all the regular aerial stuff, the members of international troupe Pirates Of The Carabina give you jokes, confessional monologues and genre-hopping musical performances. But though the range and ambition can’t be faulted, the quality of invention and execution is uneven.

The spoken-word sections are generally hit-and-miss and would benefit from some ruthless editing. Ellis Grover’s tale of youthful love is a meandering distraction from what should be the main focus – his wire-walking. Gwen Hales comes closest to striking a satisfying balance between character-based work and more traditional acrobatic daredevilry.

Attired in a sparkly diva dress and with a fixed, unnervingly bright smile on her lips, she comes on to the stage in a chariot drawn by a tiny toy horse. She then proceeds to chide the audience before becoming caught up in a spectacular equipment-malfunction gag.

Banks of instruments litter the sides of the playing area: punky guitar, wheezy accordion and skronky sax are variously deployed to create musical moods that range from winsome indie to keening folk and hard-edged rock. There’s even a drummer who swings out over the audience – very Mötley Crüe.

But it’s when the company focuses on the more traditional circus arts that they’re at their most effective – all the meticulous attempts at theatrical texturing pale beside the gasp-inducing wonder of Laura Moy’s Chinese pole work.
will also learn about the different types of animals in the show and how they are groomed and cared for.
Prior to the show, there will be rides, a bouncy house and concessions starting at 4 p.m.
One of a kind horse fair

THE sun shone for the annual Appleby Horse Fair last Friday, and young travellers made the most of it as they bathed their horses in the River Eden.
Dressed to make the most of the sunshine, the travellers plunged into the cool river to wash their steeds before selling them at the traditional horse fair.
The river was as popular with the horses as the girls riding them as temperatures soared in Cumbria and across Britain after a long and cold winter.
King James II granted a Royal Charter in 1685 allowing a horse fair to be held "near the River Eden", and every year thousands of travellers come from around Britain and the rest of the world to take part.
The horse fair, which started last Friday and goes until Wednesday, is the largest and one of the oldest fairs of its kind anywhere in Europe. Travellers and horse dealers gather at Appleby, in Westmorland, in the Eden Valley, Cumbria, to meet old friends, conduct business, but primarily to trade horses.
Traditionally they bathe the horses in the River Eden before grooming them and riding them fast along the "mad mile" to show them off to potential buyers.
As well as horses, the fair also features market stalls selling food and other merchandise as well as fortune telling, palm reading and other live entertainment. Last year the fair was featured in the hit TV series My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

HERITAGE DAYS--

The Circus Comes to Heritage Days in Plover

The circus has come to Plover. This weekend the annual Heritage Days event at Heritage Park kicked off a two year exhibit that's all about the circus and it's rich history in Portage County.

Believe it or not, in the late 19th century there were more circuses out of the State of Wisconsin than any other stare except Oklahoma. The temporary exhibit highlights the Engford family who started their own traveling circus three generations ago. Ruthie Engford-Clark's grandfather founded Engford Family Shows here in Wisconsin then took his act on the road. Engford-Clark, her father and her husband were also circus performers.

"The act that I performed with my family was what you would call today gymnastics. It was hand balancing, a lot of flexible back bending work." Engford-Clark tells NewsChannel 7. "My dream was to always work up in the air and so that's what I did."

Engford-Clark says she and her husband never miss Heritage Days, even after moving to Florida. Every year they host the Engford House where Engford-Clark and her family lived. The Portage County Historical Society even pulled out the old caravans the circus used for traveling. Organizers say they hope to show visitors what life was like for early circus performers.

"It will hopefully give people a sense of belonging, of the history of the county and how unique it is, and develop that connection with their own past, the county's past," Portage County Historical Society President Tim Siebert says.

The circus exhibit along with the other permanent exhibits at Heritage Park, including the old school house, train depot and blacksmith shop, will be open every weekend now through Labor Day.

ELEPHANT DIES--

Circus Elephant Dies in Narva

An elephant in an Estonian traveling circus died in the Narva river on Friday prompting speculation that the animal's natural death could have been sped up by mistreatment.
Trainers had taken the 47-year-old female Indian elephant for a swim in the Narva river. Locals demanded that the elephant be taken away from the public riverside, but the owners refused, eliciting a phone call to the police. Soon after, the animal appeared sluggish and fell on its side, dying in the river. A veterinarian discerned heart failure as the cause of death, ETV reported.
Animal rights activists had previously held a protest when the circus tour was in Tallinn, claiming the elephant had been punched. Tallinn Zoo director Mati Kaal told Delfi the animal had appeared old and weary. He said the average life expectancy for elephants is 60 years.
The head of the circus, Lauri Viikna, denied claims of ill-treatment.
The Väike-Maarja animal waste processing center has refused to take the dead elephant, which is currently being kept in Narva as owners seek a means to discard it.

Circus comes to Du Quoin

DU QUOIN — In his introductory remarks Saturday at Du Quoin State Fairgrounds grandstand, General Circus Chairman Bill Rei-delberger of Ainad Shriners Circus commented about the turnout.
“This is the 10th scheduled performance this year, and it’s the largest crowd we’ve had,” Reidelberger said.
The audience that numbered in the thousands was soon enjoying an opening act with tigers hopping around different platforms and doing other tricks.
An aerial extravaganza followed with six women performing on ropes and horizontal bars at great heights.
Circus performances began about a week earlier in Bellville and followed with performances in Waterloo, Jerseyville, Olney and Salem before the show arrived Saturday in Du Quoin.
“It means a lot to the communities where the circus performs. We get people now who are in the third generation of people who have seen a Shriners circus,” said circus spokesman John Blandell.

Before the show began, 4-year-old Charity Alvey rode one of the elephants with her mother,Christina Alvey, both of Ava.
“It was weird. You can still feel the elephant’s spine through all the padding,” Alvey said, noting Charity rode a show pony earlier and a camel at an earlier circus.
Circus ringmaster and trainer George Hanniford said the show elephants, Cindy and Janice, are each 40-year-old Asian elephants. They are transported by semi-trucks for their performances three months annually.
Circus site chairman Denver Tolbert said the performance in the grandstand was a homecoming of sorts. The circus had been held at the grandstand before relocating to the nearby Southern Illinois Center a few years earlier.
“We try to offer family entertainment at community prices,” Tolbert said.
Ainad Potentate Mike Grafe said Ainad’s annual circus, now in its 47th year, is the organization’s main fundraising event of the year.
He said Shriner officers were projecting $12,000 to $15,000 gate revenues for each show in the state fairgrounds grandstand. Pro-ceeds benefit Ainad Shriners operations with most of the money going toward Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis.
The Ainad Shriners is a Masonic fraternal organization with more than 4,000 members throughout Southern Illinois.

TOM DUFFY'S CIRCUS

Circus boss delighted with council decision

from:  newtownabbeytoday.com
09/06/2013
Bosses at Tom Duffy’s Circus have welcomed a decision by Newtownabbey council that will allow them to bring their show to the borough later this month.
It looked like the circus wouldn’t be permitted to use council land after some members branded its use of animals in its shows “cruel” and “archaic” and called for a permanent ban on such circuses from using council sites.
The issue has divided opinion within the council chamber, and individual parties. Back in April, members voted to turn down the original application by Duffy’s Circus. But at their monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 28, they voted 13 - 8 to allow it to set up at Sixmilewater Park on June 17 and 18, and Loughshore Park from June 19 - 23.
Mark McFerran, business manager at Tom Duffy’s Circus, said he was “delighted” with the council’s decision.
Owner Tom Duffy added: “It was great that some councillors took the time to come and see our animals when we visited Junction One. This played a big part in having the earlier decision overturned as these councillors had first hand knowledge of our animals. It was disappointing though that of the councillors who voted against us in the last vote, not one of them accepted our invitation to visit our animals. We have had great support from members of the public and are looking forward to returning to Newtownabbey.”
Meanwhile, Mr McFerran has hit back at comments made by Alliance alderman John Blair during last month’s Policy and Governance Committee meeting when, after a vote on the Duffy’s application, he suggested that some members may have been influenced by the offer of free tickets to the circus.
While acknowledging that Duffy’s does offer tickets to good causes such as youth groups and charities, and that tickets are often distributed through the mayor’s office in each council area, he denied that members’ decisions had been swayed by free tickets.
“We did not offer any councillors free tickets for our circus. We invited all councillors along to help them make an informed decision after visiting our animals at the circus. The councillors who did accept our invitation visited during the day to see how our animals live and did not attend a performance, nor received tickets for other performances,” he commented.
Meanwhile, DUP councillor Thomas Hogg has expressed his disappointed at the council’s decision to permit circuses which use animals in their acts to set up in local parks.
The Macedon representative has branded the use of animals in circuses “cruel and barbaric”, and says he remains totally opposed to such forms of entertainment, despite the outcome of last week’s council vote.
“A growing number of local authorities across the United Kingdom and in the Free State have banned such circuses from their property. The decision of the council is unfortunate and I think is a regressive step that goes against the tide of public opinion on the issue,” he commented.
Cllr Hogg stressed that he will oppose any future applications from circuses which use animals in their acts.

Children and parents at a Hampstead Garden Suburb primary school enjoyed an evening at the circus to support plans for a new playground.
Around 500 Garden Suburb Junior School pupils and their parents joined travelling circus group Happy’s Circus for an evening of entertainment on the school’s field, in Child’s Way, last Tuesday (June 4).
The event, organised by the school’s Parent Teacher Association, is thought to have raised up to £5,000 which will all go towards a grand re-design of the school’s playground.
Happy’s Circus stayed overnight on the school field before the event and set up a big-top tent for performances.
Headteacher Eileen Bhavsar said: “There were juggling clowns, balancing acts, trapeze artists and people balancing knives and fire! It was a fun, family show.
“There was a real feel-good factor on the day because it was the first day back after the school holidays.”
